Why Accountability Feels So Rare

and we kind of talked a little bit before we got on, but first let's talk about how you deal with someone who just refuses in your life to take accountability. Do you just go straight in for the conversation? Do you kind of just cut them out? Like, how do you kind of go about it? So we'll start there and then we'll kind of talk and break down, you know, some ways that people just don't want to just sweep it under the rug.

No, and because even if it were me, I would just feel like say I did nothing wrong, but someone was mad I did something, I would still feel bad that they that like that I did something that like I'm willing to have that conversation, but I'm sorry, like not and I'm sorry that you feel this way, I'm sorry that whatever I did made you feel that way.

And it's like, but it's not obviously you did this, you messed up. Well, you I love this one. Well, you're supposed to forgive. Well, that forgiveness doesn't mean you take away all accountability. I could forgive you without you saying I'm sorry, but that doesn't mean I want to be a part of your life, and vice versa. If you are unwilling to say, that was my fault, I messed up, I am sorry, and have a conversation and a want to reconnect. And I feel like people just they they brush it under the rug and hope you forget it. Yeah, you know, forgive and forget. That's not a thing. You could forgive, but still remain you're gonna be smart. If you have a dog and it bites you, you're gonna go, that dog bites. I'm gonna stay away from that one.

She does it with everybody, she's non-confrontational, she doesn't want to deal with anything ever, and it's so frustrating because it's you know, it depends how you handle it, depends

Forgiveness Without Reconnection

on who they are in your life. Yeah, you know, the closeness of that. Some people you can just cut them off and be like, all right, you just you don't need to be a part of my life anymore. Some people are a little closer, yeah. Where it's like that's a little tougher to do. So it's which she's gotten a lot better. I mean, she's been really working, and I I tell her all the time, I see you working on this stuff, you know, and it's it's it's a the people in their life have to continually have those conversations with them. Yeah, they have to not let them sweep stuff under the rug. Yeah. And it it's it's a non-stop thing. And it's exhausting, and it it's but it's just part of helping that person grow. But if they don't want to grow, there's no point.

Yeah. And it it doesn't it doesn't get you anywhere. Right. Because all it does is builds up frustration in the other person, and they can maybe deal with it for a while, but after a while, it's like, okay, this is getting right, it's becoming a habit now, yeah, to where it's not just one thing, because we've all done that before, is tried to just move on from something, but when it becomes a habit, now there's no accountability for that person, and they just keep doing that in every aspect, and it gives them an okay to do that.

Here's the thing that that bugs me the most is the people that let people do that to them, and they just let time go by and then let them people just write back into their life and they get hurt again, and it's like, well, I don't know why they hurt me again. Again, it's the same, it's the it's the dog that bit you that you brought back into your house and you wonder why it bit you again.

How many of them they stay outside where they belong? No, but I have this problem with my children about you know, they'll hurt me and I'll let them back in. They'll hurt me and I'll let them back in, though. I mean, and it's it's been ongoing for years, and I'm just now at 48, 48 years old. Yeah, I had to do math. 48? 48, 84. Uh I had to get to a point to where I'm like, not anymore. Yeah, I'm not chasing you to be a part of my family, and I'm not allowing you to hurt me anymore. Yeah. You don't want to be a part of my family? Don't.

And it's okay to figure out patterns. When you see a pattern, it's okay to expect the same pattern to continue. That's not being negative. That's not that's that's going, hey, history is on my side. Right. History says you're gonna treat me like this because you treated me like this and and had no accountability, right? Therefore, I can expect it again. Right. You know, if there's no willingness to change or meet halfway, it's probably gonna happen again.

You know, it's it's so frustrating. Because there are some people that you feel you do want in your life. Right. You know, you you do want to see the best in people, but they just cannot. It's like it's something missing in them. They just cannot be held accountable.

Well, and it it you can't do it to a detriment of yourself either. Yeah. Because you'll get to a point, like you said, the frustration builds up, and now you have an attitude with everybody.

Because a lot of us, our next step isn't cut them out, it's to try to do everything in our power to bring them back in and and try to show them their ways. I feel like we spend so much energy doing that, trying to get people. Man, if you just realize what you did, and and then we start feeling guilty because they're not in our lives.

And if one or all is not willing to do that, you you can't move you can't move forward.

As as guys, as as men of God, as as as just people, we want to fix the situation that and sometimes it's not ours to fix. Right. And we have to understand the difference between what we did versus what somebody else did that they thought we did. Right.

Does that make sense? Yes. Well, and and you create, we talked about patterns, you're now creating by doing that a bad pattern in that person. So now they're learning I can do this, sweep it under the rug, they're gonna even come to me and apologize, and then I'll be able to do it again because the same thing's gonna happen. Right. So they not only don't learn, they're actually learning that they can continue to do that. Right. So you're creating a bad pattern in that relationship where they do something to you, they give it some time, you feel bad, you come and apologize just to make peace, they do it again. Yep. So you're instead of fixing it, you're making it worse. Right. You know, it's it's it's the you know, if you're if your battery in your car is going out and you just keep changing a wire, even though your battery's bad. Yeah. Oh, just change the wire, change the wire. You're not getting to the problem. You're you're creating a whole new one. And it it's at some point it's just got to change. Um and and I get there's grace for everyone. No matter what you've done, there's there's always a chance for you to be forgiven. But just because you're forgiven doesn't mean you can be put back in that same position.

Okay, this this kills me with you know, uh a pastor that does something. Okay, they this pastor is a drug abuser behind the scenes and he's doing it for years, and it finally comes out. Oh, well, he's gonna take a year sabbatical and then come back and get placed right back in.

When Leaders Dodge Real Consequences

anywhere else it's not okay. We just do it in ministry. So what we're telling people is your talent outweighs your accountability.

So as long as you're good at what you do, right? You don't have to be held accountable. Just step away, give it some time, you can be put right back in there.

Well, the same I see I saw the same thing when I was in school with sports. The rule was, you know, when I was in high school, if you had an F one week, that whole week, you could not play. If you had an F on Monday and you brought it up that day or the next day, you had a game on Friday, you still did not play on Friday. Right. The parents and the principals would do everything. And you know, and you know, I see the teachers kind of fighting back on it, trying to, you know, hold that standard. Yeah, kudos to them. Unfortunately, teachers can only do so much in that sense, especially when admin gets involved. Yeah, and they're like, just play them anyways. Yeah, yeah, because they're gonna do something they're not gonna be able to read their contract, right? Right.

Yeah, right. And and it because you wouldn't do it anywhere else. It's it's almost only in ministry for what we're talking about right now, where that's allowed. Okay, if if I worked for Tesla, shout out, Elon. Jim. If I worked for Tesla and a job, come on, man. Uh and and I was an accountant, and I embezzled $10 million and got caught, got in trouble, got punished, had to had to fess up to it. Would they then hire me back after six months to be an accountant again?

Only in ministry can we go, okay, you're we're gonna take you away from that, but because you're good at it, we'll put you back.

Well, do you feel that there's no road back? I I because I know, I know, and the reason I ask is because I know some denominations and organizations have you know actual like treatment plans. Yeah, procedures in place to to go through counseling. I do.

Okay, absolutely. But there are certain procedures, it isn't just walk back in, remove, give time, replace. Right. It's because that seems to be the procedure a lot of places. Right. It isn't you need to go to everybody you've hurt, you need to fess up, you need to make sure that you're making things right, you need to go through this program, this program. It's okay, we're gonna take you away from that, give it some time, we'll put you back.

And a lot of times, even in that, they put them in other positions within the church. Yeah. That is just like you're just not seeing your pastor, your associate pastor.

Right. And we'll well, yeah, it's it's or I've seen like like abuse, like physical abuse of people, sexual abuse of people in the church. They'll take that pastor and they'll pay them for their leave. Yeah. Like, oh, they're gonna take a year sabbatical with pay while we're figuring this out. And it's like, What's to figure out? What are we doing? Yeah. Like, what are we doing? And and again, in no other place is that okay. I'm not saying there's not a road back, right? But we are skipping, it seems we are skipping a lot of steps.

Well, it's you know, if whenever I'm talking with someone, quote unquote interviewing someone that wants to join the worship team or whatever, one of the questions I asked them, is there anything in your life right now that may disqualify you from this? I mean if you say you There's some someone that that does something like that, they're removed from leadership, and they want you know to be back in leadership. Asking that question, is there anything right now that will disqualify this based on your past and all that and everything leading up, is there anything right now that would disqualify you? And it's kind of like if you can't if you can't say no to that, honestly. Yeah.

Right. And it's and I think even after that, even after they're they they went through this process, they I don't think that process ever ends. You have given up your right for that privacy after you've done that. So this is what I mean. I I've counseled like a married couple, okay? So the wife steps out, cheats on them. They've now come back, they want to work through it. Forgiveness, they're they're they're doing counseling, they're ready to do this. I have to tell that wife now, hey, look, you've been forgiven, we're moving forward. He is not to bring it back up. Y'all both agreed you're moving forward together. This is left in the past, you're forgiven, you fessed up, blah, blah, blah. However, you've given up all your right to privacy and you're phone. He he's gonna have every code, he's gonna be able to check your you've given that up now. Right. Doesn't mean he doesn't forgive you, but you've got to go these extra steps to show that what I did, I've learned, I've grown, and I've moved forward. So I don't want to hear, oh, they don't trust me, they want my phone, password, and all that. You've given that up. Yeah, you've done it. So you stepped out. Right. So a pastor messes up, he goes through all this, admits it, gets you know put back, like, hey, here's Grace, you've done all this. Okay, cool. Now you're gonna have people that are that are over you that are checking in every so often to make sure this isn't happening, this is going on, this is going on.

And it and if you're in that position and you truly want, you know, whatever it is back genuinely, then you should be willing to go those extra steps. We're talking uh Preston was talking on or preaching on Zacchaeus on Sunday, uh talking about he's the chief tax collector and has you know has cheated people out a bunch of money, and and he was saying like in that time it was customary if you cheated someone out of money or whatever, you you know, you'd pay pay back the money plus like 20%.

What Restoration Should Actually Require
