Almost Brothers Podcast
You Do Not Notice A Season Ending..... Until It Does
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
People don’t usually walk out of our lives in one dramatic moment. More often, they fade in the background while work changes, distance grows, and new responsibilities quietly take over. We sit down and talk about “seasons of life” the friendships you thought would last forever, the relationships that drift without a fight, and the strange relief of realizing you can miss someone and still be okay.
Jacob and Abbie join us fresh off a major transition: years of long distance marriage during military service and the shift back to being close enough to build daily rhythms together. We get real about time zones, limited call windows, the stress of watching each other grow through a phone screen, and the awkward but beautiful process of re learning shared space as newlyweds. If you care about military marriage, long distance relationship advice, newlywed communication, or protecting your relationship under pressure, their perspective hits home.
We also go deeper into the seasons we are grateful to survive burnout, selfishness, and addiction and what it looks like to set boundaries when work starts stealing your health and your home life. Faith shows up as more than a slogan, from Bible studies over video chat to the reminder that a job can replace you, but your family cannot. Then we lighten it up with home decorating debates, heated floors dreams, and one unforgettable question: should a six foot gorilla couch ever be allowed?

SPEAKER_00That's a bad thing.
SPEAKER_02Wait, what wait, that I'm excited or that That we don't know why.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh, so y'all are worried that I do something crazy? Always. Crazy. What's up? What's up? What's up? What's up? What's up, what's up, what's up, everybody. Welcome back to a brand new episode of the Almost Brothers Podcast. As always, we got Richie Rich.
SPEAKER_06Yes, sir.
SPEAKER_02How are you doing?
SPEAKER_06I am fantastic.
SPEAKER_02Fantastic. Do you get some rest?
SPEAKER_06I'm fantastic.
SPEAKER_02Not that fantastic. Producer Zeke, how are you doing?
SPEAKER_06Good. Chilling. Like always. It's the chair. It has to be the chair. He's sitting tired in the chair.
SPEAKER_02No tie tie tonight. They got VBS, but we have special guests, the Kui Mans. Hello, hello.
SPEAKER_01Hi.
SPEAKER_02Just hi. How's it going?
Welcoming Jacob Home From Service
SPEAKER_02How are y'all? For those of y'all that don't know, Jacob is in the military and he is back. I almost said seaside. Back stateside with us. Welcome back, man. Thank you. Thank you. You're welcome. Three and a half years. I know it's crazy. Crazy, crazy. So how does it feel to be back around family?
SPEAKER_04It's it's hard to put into words. Uh because like in a way, I had my own family out there. I shared an office with seven guys, seven mechanics, as well as like my other division, and then all 200 200 other members of just service members. Yeah. Everyone was real close. Uh I mean, granted, you're on a rock that's 32 miles long and 16 miles wide.
SPEAKER_02Like you see how you're kind of stuck around each other.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, everyone loves each other, hates each other, knows each other. Yeah. But it's a family away from family. It's much better to be back home around everyone else.
SPEAKER_02Abby, how you feel having them back? Your hoobie.
SPEAKER_01Good. He just gets on my nerves.
SPEAKER_02Look at that. Yeah, I love you, but you just drive me crazy. She wants me to go back. He gets on all of our nerves, so don't feel bad. But we are excited about today's episode. Today's episode, we're gonna be talking about seasons of life.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02I don't know why y'all looked at me like that. What are the seasons, Michael? What why do y'all look at me like that?
SPEAKER_06I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop.
SPEAKER_02Uh no, it's seasons of life, man. Just talking about how we go through different seasons, different people come in and out, maybe sometimes back in, maybe that, you know, of life and how And it's it's it's I'm sorry, I didn't mean to remember.
SPEAKER_06No, you're good. But I was at a truck stop the other day and I got to thinking about a friend of mine that I had I he was a friend of mine for like 20 years. And I haven't seen or talked to him in a long time. And it was one of those friendships
Why Friendships Fade Over Time
SPEAKER_06is like, I just know I'm gonna know this guy the rest of my life, you know, we were that close. And I was thinking about him, and I was like, I don't I don't ever talk to him, and it's I'm I'm okay. I mean, I'm not like just but it's like a weird thing, just what you're talking about, how people come and go from your life, you know. You you have friends in high school that you probably aren't even friends with anymore, yeah, beyond Facebook. Right. And you know, work friends that you have while you work there, and then you move on. It's you know, you do the whole, yeah, man, keep in contact, and you don't you don't talk to people from past past jobs. It's just it's a crazy, crazy thing.
SPEAKER_02And it me and Zeke were talking, this is what's kind of sparked this this thought is me and Zeke were talking and we're talking about we can't wait for fall and for winter to come around. And yes, please. And I just I I I began to really think about how it it doesn't happen like that. Yeah, it's a slow transition, the same thing with seasons of people in our life, or seasons of you're going through certain things, and you know, life has those ups and downs, and you kind of go through things, and it's like it doesn't there's there's really never, like you just said, with a friend, there's never this big moment. Sometimes there is, right?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, the falling out or something, yeah.
SPEAKER_02But most of the time it's just a life kind of drifts you in two different directions, and it's like, oh man, I miss so and so I haven't seen them in a long time or talked to them in a long time. But um, it's crazy to see, and I believe that God puts people in your life sometimes for a season, sometimes for good, but sometimes just for a season. And nothing good or bad about it, it just kind of comes and goes. Zeke, do you have some friends that maybe you grew up with that you thought you, oh man, we're always gonna be friends and talking, and you just kind of life has drifted y'all away a little bit. Um I know like social media and phones help kind of connect you, but yeah, because one example is TJ.
SPEAKER_00Y'all like y'all know TJ, right? Me and him was like really close, and we still talk to the day. We talk like every day. Yeah. But some other people, right? Like Quentin, he's one of my other friends. Yeah, we don't talk because I didn't get to like get his number or anything.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. And it's it's sometimes it's just sad sometimes too, because you you miss those things. You don't realize it when you're in the middle of it that you'll miss it so much. And like people come and go, and it's like, oh man, I kind of you know, kind of miss seeing them around or or or being a part of that. And talking about you coming back stateside, thank you very much. Not seaside, you know, y'all went through a a long season of being married and having to live not only apart, but a a huge distance apart, you know, right.
SPEAKER_047,000 miles.
SPEAKER_02So how how is that where now you're coming into a new season of being back, y'all being able to be together, and and we were, you know, we know that you you make Abby crazy. So she's dealing with this change of season and trying to trying to kind of go with it. But what what is one thing that you look forward to
Long Distance Marriage And Reuniting
SPEAKER_02in this new season of life as a married couple? This is the first time y'all got to be a married couple. Be a married couple, right?
SPEAKER_04You want to start off? Or I mean, so August makes five years for us together. Yeah. Uh high school sweethearts and everything. But next week makes four years of me in service. Yeah. So that puts us over our majority of relationships being long distance overseas. Yeah. Uh from California to Gulfport and then to Guam, four years is a long time separated. Right. And everything watching each other grow through the phone is is horrible, let alone watching everyone else grow. I'm just excited to for us to officially start our own lives together. Yeah. Uh, I mean, granted, she's gonna work some here and I'm gonna be there, and then she'll come see me some. Yeah. Uh so we won't.
SPEAKER_02It's a whole lot easier of a travel though.
SPEAKER_04Like it's instead of 28 hours of flying, she has eight hours of driving. I have eight hours of driving. Yeah. Uh I'm just excited for all of it. I mean, our lives will officially start together three years from now when we're out of service. Yeah. Uh, but I mean, I'm just excited for us to officially live together, have our own home together, start our own family together and all that. But it also has like some takeaways because we're all we're so used to just having our own times. Yeah. And so I have a very strong feeling it's gonna get to the points where she'd be like, get away from me, go to the other one.
SPEAKER_02Oh, absolutely. That welcome to marriage. Okay, there's sometimes like, you again, really?
SPEAKER_04Like, she was complaining about how it worked too much, and now she's gonna be complaining how I'm not working enough.
SPEAKER_02Don't you got somewhere to be?
SPEAKER_06Didn't I talk to you yesterday?
SPEAKER_01So, like he said, you know, we've been together almost five years, married for a year. The majority of those has been him and Guam or whatever. And I don't know, like I know a big change is gonna be the time difference. Yeah. Right. I used to talk three hours out of the day, Max.
SPEAKER_02And you had to like do you had to schedule like when you were gonna call each other to kind of catch that.
SPEAKER_01Like, what all do you got going on? Because I have my own life separate from him. He's got his friends outside of whoever was back home. Yeah. And so that was a big issue that we really had to go through was trying to find time to fit each other in in our schedules. Um, missing out on plans that you really wanted to go to, but it's like, hey, I need to I need to speak to my significant other or whoever. But I'm excited to decorate a house. Yeah, right, yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_04Finally. Let me tell you about this real quick. That let me get this off my chest real quick. I was home for Christmas last year, and we're getting all these Christmas gifts, all these pots and pans, all these house accessories and everything. And I'm sitting here, I'm like, I didn't say yes to a single one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like, wait a second. Again, welcome to the club.
SPEAKER_04What does he think this is? Like, I'm sitting here, I'm thinking, I'm like, all right, maybe I'll get my onesie twosies ideas in there or whatever. And she's like, nope, you're getting green pots and pans with gold handles. Yeah, but you're only allowed to use them whenever I'm there. Yeah, you're not allowed to burn them, you're not allowed to use them, you're not even allowed to look at them.
SPEAKER_06I haven't gotten a neat Christmas present in 20 years. It's a it's a yaw. Yeah, yeah. This is for y'all.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. A fun thing, right? I mean, granted, you guys know me. A lot of my ideas are stupid. I mean, you know, she keeps saying no to my dream couch. I mean, he's finally he's coming around.
SPEAKER_02There we go. We're getting there.
SPEAKER_04Your dream, what? She keeps saying no to my dream couch, right? Dream.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so what is your dream couch? I'm I'm now I'm I'm intrigued. I'm aware I'm intrigued.
SPEAKER_04It is so it's it's a regular three-seater couch, yeah, right. But the only catch is like like like the back rushed is about six feet tall. And it's because it is in the shape of a gorilla. This is this is a man cave idea, and she's like, nope. Someone out there will agree with her.
SPEAKER_06What let's hear in the show notes is happening if you want the gorilla cast. Right now.
SPEAKER_04I I keep making the joke with her, and she goes, You think you have an idea? You think you have any control of what's happening? I'm like, no, I just get the garage. I understand.
SPEAKER_02See, I think what has happened is over these years, Abby has learned from some of the best, is what it sounds like. Is some of our wives have been pouring into Abby, and she realizes that just how strong a marriage is one-sided.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Jamie's my best friend. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_02I got my corner. Well, now I have a a loft area, but I had a corner of the house.
SPEAKER_04That was it. Our agreement is she gets the whole house, I get just the garage. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06I have a I have a I have a hallway from a many brands.
SPEAKER_02And be happy with that, okay? That's that's you should be thankful that you get that much.
SPEAKER_04We were talking not too long ago about like house plans and floor plans and everything. And I was like, okay, I got the VA home loan, I can use all that, real interest-free, real like real beginner-friendly for like homeowners and stuff. And then she took that and she goes, 'Well, I want heated floors. I want two stories.
SPEAKER_01I want heated.' Oh, oh, oh Set. I said no heated floors.
SPEAKER_04But she goes, I want a full wraparound porch. And I'm just like, you know how much that is?
SPEAKER_06Wait a wait a minute. Are heated floors a thing? Yeah, did you not know that? Yes, I know. Yeah, I want heated floors.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, like in the bathroom, especially. Man, well, because because I know that I know myself, I want hardwood floors. Yeah. And if you do like it's like a 2,000, like if you do 2,000 foot or square foot or whatever, it's only 5,000 installed heated floors.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it's only. Oh, okay. That's all it is.
SPEAKER_04If you're looking at building a full house to like your specs and everything that you want in life, Jacob, I don't I don't think you're understanding.
SPEAKER_02Look, I'm happy to be renting a house. Like you're you're talking about if you're building your own house, then you can do that.
SPEAKER_04I'm 22 years old. I I have big dreams in life. That'll be crushed. Nothing wrong with that.
SPEAKER_02Let's get big dreams of a gorilla couch. And of heated floors. Gorilla couch not happening. You heard it here first. It's not happening.
SPEAKER_04Not even in the garage? No. You can't have that in there. She she says that, but she's gonna come home one day with like a llama or something, and it's gonna be happy with it.
SPEAKER_06Where do you get said gorilla couch? Is this a thing? Amazon. Is it is it really a thing?
SPEAKER_02Oh, you can find yeah, you can find anything.
SPEAKER_04Anything's on the internet. You can find anything.
SPEAKER_06You need to stay off the internet. Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_02Like, right. Just wow.
SPEAKER_01But no, another big thing, like switching back and forth, is like you said, alone time. I like to be by myself.
SPEAKER_06We know you trying to ignore everybody's days.
SPEAKER_01I don't like answering text messages when it's not on my time, which is usually three to five business days.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like Abby said yeah. No, no, go back
Building A Home And Big Dream Debates
SPEAKER_02and like, oh, last Saturday we asked her if burgers were good.
SPEAKER_01But it's just gonna be weird coexisting with another person, say, having shared spaces where obviously I still live with my parents, but I'm used to having my own room, my own space to where I can escape literally everything existing with whatever's going on in my house.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so it's like even though y'all are married, you're starting out as newlyweds, you know, like, oh, what's this? Because you'll you'll find things that drive you crazy that you didn't know was even a thing, but that other person's just like, oh my gosh, it drives me crazy. And I know I don't, I mean, obviously, I don't need any of y'all. I'm about to mute all of y'all. Let me mute y'all real quick. I know I have things that I that drive Jamie crazy, little things that I do that drive her crazy. But you you'll you'll notice that, and that almost strengthens your love. Even those things, it's like, oh man, this annoys me, but man, I still love you through that. And it makes you love them even more.
SPEAKER_06When you talk to widowers or widows, they don't remember the big stuff. It's those little annoying things that they miss the most. Yeah. Because those are the things that make a relationship, those are the things you build your life on.
SPEAKER_02And that make that person unique. Right. It's that little thing that only you know about, that nobody else does. Like, oh, that drives me crazy. But it kind of intrigues you about them. I like I like um flaws in people. Like I'm I'm drawn to flaws in people. So especially my wife, little we're friends. Right, right, exactly. A lot of flaws to pick from. No, and and and you'll discover those about each other that drive you crazy but make you fall more in love with them because they're the only one on the planet that could drive you crazy in those little ways. You know, nobody you don't have that intimacy with anybody else. Right. In a in a smaller way with your kids, like they'll do things that drive you crazy, like Zeke. Well, it'll be a serious time where I'm telling him something and he'll joke, and I'm like, oh, dude, I hate that. Five more years he'll be 18. Five more years he'll be 18. We won't punch him, homicom. No, but it it's at that is you ever have a season of life? I know we talked about the season of life that that you like you miss like a friend that's no longer there. You ever ever had a seasonal life that you're just glad to get through and and be done with? Yeah. Like I'm so ready to get over this. This is where it sparked it. We we were talking today. I'm sort of ready for this weather to be over. Yeah. And it's like, man, I'm ready to get out of this season and go to the next one.
SPEAKER_06Well, and I'll I'll go a little imagine this. I'm gonna go a little dark. Uh-oh. So I went through a couple years of alcoholism. Yeah, I was I was an alcoholic for a couple years, and and looking back on that, I am number one, surprised I lived through that season. Number two, I'm glad that I am through that. I don't it was a it was just dark, it was just a dark time. But that's a season that was bad, but I learned a lot too. Yeah. You know, so I'm able to even use that in ministry. So but I'm glad it's over.
SPEAKER_02Mine was a season of selfishness.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You know, I for a majority of my life it was about others, and I was serving others and doing, and then I just got to the point where I'm like, I don't care about anybody else. I'm gonna do what I want. Right. And it was just bad. I turned into a guy that I don't like. Yeah. It's one of the ones that I would punch in the face. Just saying.
SPEAKER_04Straight up D. I understand that. Uh it's like my three years in Guam, my first two years out there, I was just go, go, go. If something's needed of me, I'll do it. Doesn't matter the time of day, just get it done. Someone else needs my help. So I spent I spent two years doing that, and she can even attest to it because like I was so busy, I wasn't even able to text her or call her. And then that like last final year and a half, I was like, wait, this is damaging me more than it's helping me like spiritually or or like with my just physical self. Yeah. So I just took that last year. I stepped away from everything. I was like, hey, I'm gonna do the few jobs that make me happy. If it's within this certain time frame, call somebody else. Yeah, like there's there's only so much I can do as one person. Like there's always more than one person that can do your job. Yeah, as as sad of a reality that is, because so many people focus on like job security and everything. There's somebody else that can do that job. Yeah, don't stress yourself out doing that specifically, right? Because you're damaging not only yourself, but your loved ones around you.
SPEAKER_02Well, I told I just told a guy this week that I was counseling. Like your job, your whatever it is, they can replace you. Your kids and your wife can't. Right. That is irreplaceable to them. So that needs to be your number one focus because your job, your career, your
Alone Time And The Little Annoyances
SPEAKER_02whatever it is, yeah, of course they're gonna miss you, but they'll replace you. Kids can't. You can't replace dad, you can't replace mom, you can't replace that with someone else. Now you can help fill those shoes, but you can't replace it. So it's it's important to focus, keep your focus on what needs to be prioritized.
SPEAKER_06Well, I thought was really, really cool. I don't know how I found out about it, but I found out that you and Abby did Bible studies like video chat for on the phone or however y'all did them, and just even 7,000 miles apart, keeping God in the middle of that is was amazing. That yeah, as a young couple, y'all were committed to doing that. I thought that was amazing.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, your covenant's not just with one another, it's with God, too.
SPEAKER_06That's right.
SPEAKER_04I I'll tell you what, God is the reason we are together. Yeah, because I mean, being out there, like I I see so many of my guys, my my friends and stuff, their marriages and their relationships fall through because their wives don't want to be out in Guam. We don't even want to be out in Guam. We're we're forced to be out there. Yeah. But it's like everyone's everyone's relationships are falling out, and those people I know are not religious people. Uh and it's really hard to be religious out there because a lot of the churches aren't the best. Yeah. But um, that's that's a whole nother topic.
SPEAKER_06But I mean all the people of Guam stopped listening just right then. Well, no, like we lost an entire country. Like one one quick example.
SPEAKER_04Like I went to one of the churches and they forced you to tithe. Like they locked the doors and the deacons stood at the doors until everyone came out.
SPEAKER_02Close the doors. There's some American churches that do that too. Which is so bad.
SPEAKER_04It's like it's like people aren't in the financial status, but that's a whole nother topic. So bad. Yeah. But like, not many people can go through like or say they can go through what we went through, but I just my one backtrack on why it all happened, why we stay together is God itself.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yep, that's good.
SPEAKER_01Like, going back to him saying that he worked a lot, I feel like a big thing that made him come into check was y'all, you know, his health declined. And I told him, I was like, I nobody can replace you as a person in my life. And I was like, You you're so consumed with work, you don't have time for me. Yeah. I was like, that doesn't make me happy.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01I was like, so why don't we draw back a little bit? Because you're obviously stressing yourself out too much. I said, because if you continue to do this, because at this point we weren't married, yeah, I'm gonna be gone. Yeah. There's gonna be no saving this relationship. Yeah. So I feel like that made me come into realization, like, oh crap, I've been putting work over her for however long, the last two years I've been here. What are we gonna do if I what am I gonna do if I don't have her in my life anymore? Because all we've known is each other since I was 15 and he was 17.
SPEAKER_02And sometimes that's what you need. You need your your significant other to say, hey, look, I'm feeling neglected. I'm feeling empty. You're not holding up your end because you sometimes you just don't realize, especially dudes, we're dumb. Let's just sometimes we're do you know I mean, so sometimes we need that. Hey, do you realize this? Oh no, I didn't. Let me fix that.
SPEAKER_04You know, which one one of my like favorite things about
Dark Seasons Work Boundaries And Faith
SPEAKER_04her is us men, we're very short-term thinkers. Yeah, we we think about at most the next three months in our life. Yeah, her herself, she's thinking 20 years down the road. And I'm like, oh, wait a minute. That kind of makes sense. Yeah, like oh, but like you guys know us, uh the listeners really don't. You see us two. The only person with the brain realistically is her. I mean, I I have the common sense for the in set.
SPEAKER_06You know, y'all, y'all can't share a brain. That's not gonna work. That's not a brain determined goal. We know this.
SPEAKER_02That's a Zeke, what's uh what's us what's the season? I know you hated Alabama.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we all did.
SPEAKER_02What's the season in your young 13-year-old life that you're glad you were glad to get out of? Alabama.
SPEAKER_01Alabama?
SPEAKER_02No, really, Alabama. No, seriously. Yeah, not the band. Yeah, no, I forgot that was a band named Alabama. Yeah, so if you are going through a season that you're just struggling, understand uh it's cliche, you hear it all the time. This too shall pass. It just it but it is, it's true, it holds.
SPEAKER_06Well, and a lot of things are cliche for a reason, right?
SPEAKER_02Right. It it will. So if you're going through a season that you're really struggling in, understand it's gonna come and go. If you're going through a season you really love, understand it's gonna come and go. Like if it's not always gonna be that way. Sometimes we wanna wish our way into staying where we're at because it's great. It's gonna like life's gonna get tough. It's just gonna happen. So enjoy the seasons. Take away what you can, leave what you can, move forward.
SPEAKER_06It's about to be doodle season in our house. We're getting another doodle. That's what animal one million. Hey, first of all, that's too much judgment in your voice. Don't you mute me either. Dern. Dern diddy durn turn. It's doodle season, Mike.
SPEAKER_01And the crowd is not short. What's up, what's up, what's up? I'm Zeke and thank you for joining.
SPEAKER_04We just playing with the butterfly slime earlier. I was expecting that voice, not a girl.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I was like, oh my cousin TJ was at church. He said, dang, he got tall. Like, what is happening right now?
SPEAKER_04I walked up to him and I was like, what are you, 25 years old now? Yeah. I remember I remember pulling up to your house so many years ago, and he was breakdancing out in the driveway.
SPEAKER_02And now you pull up to the house and he's breakdancing in the driveway. So we are now gonna go to a segment. It's gonna be fun. This is gonna be a game. So it's gonna be me and Zeke's gonna be a team, and then me and Richard, because we have an odd number, me and Richard's gonna be a team, and then y'all two are gonna be a team.
SPEAKER_04Can I change teammates? Okay. Can I switch?
SPEAKER_02Okay. No. So here's what you do, and we're gonna start with y'all two. You're gonna say, we're gonna go one, two, three, and you say a word. And you have to match up and say the same word. You get you get three chances to match up and say the same word. Okay? So you'll start out and like if one of you says car and one of you says swimming pool, you try to match up so you can use that information to go to your next word. You get three chances
The One Word Matching Game
SPEAKER_02to say the same word.
SPEAKER_06So it's just a random word? Yes.
SPEAKER_02Yes. Okay. Oh no. Alright, y'all ready? I guess. One, two, three.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I I thought there was a prompt. There is a prompt. It's me going one, two, three.
SPEAKER_02All right. One, two, three. Car.

SPEAKER_04I I I went to the place, I went to the place where we where we eat Mexican at, and instead she goes to a car that we have never drove, looked at, or talked about.
SPEAKER_01I've been in a van before. Have you met my Mimi?
SPEAKER_04I don't know. Maybe it's actually. I wish everyone really I well I wish everyone could see the amount of attitude she had in her face when she just looked at me.
SPEAKER_02Maybe maybe it's get me getting older, but I started to see some vans. I'm like, those are pretty nice. Dude, they are nice. I love minivans. I don't think Jamie would ever drive one, but yeah, like, man, you know, I said that a lot of people.
