You can tell a lot about a town by what happens on a random Saturday. When the weather is nice and the vendors are set up, do people just stroll through, or do they step in and help, check on each other, and treat the day like it belongs to everyone? We’re recording outside for this one, and the conversation keeps landing on the same idea: real community is built by people who show up early, stay late, and do the work that doesn’t come with a spotlight.

We talk with Alan Cavaness about service, preparation, and what it means to keep giving your time even when you’re “supposed to be” retired. We also get into the pastor’s kid reality with Zeke and why cleanup, setup, and responsibility can be frustrating but formative. That leads to one of the biggest takeaways we’ve heard in a while: ministry starts with a broom in your hand. Leadership and character usually begin with the simple tasks.

Then Mike Trevillion joins us to share how volunteering keeps local history alive through the Rector Community Museum, from military displays to school artifacts and the memories that hit people the moment they walk in. Samantha jumps in with what it takes to run community events well, including our upcoming car show on November 1st, and she gives an honest perspective on why “it takes a village” is not a cliché when you’re raising a kid and leaning on teachers, coaches, and church family for support.

If you care about small town life, volunteering, church community, and raising good humans, this one’s for you. Subscribe to Almost Brothers, share it with a friend who serves behind the scenes, and leave a review so more people can find the show.

Cold Open Outside Banter

SPEAKER_01

Easy. Come on, man. Don't be doing that. Come on. We're trying to. Goodness gracious. PDA. What is going on?

SPEAKER_05

That's my bad.

SPEAKER_01

You what?

SPEAKER_05

That's my bad.

SPEAKER_01

That's my bad. There are children present.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Teenagers. Y'all look away.

SPEAKER_01

The teenagers. There's a two. Yep, yep, you're still a child. And plus, I was talking about Alan. What's up, what's up, everybody? Welcome back to a brand new episode of the Almost Brothers Podcast. As always, we got the Zekster. What's up? Alright. We got Richie Rich.

SPEAKER_05

Hey man, how's it going?

SPEAKER_01

How's it going, man?

SPEAKER_05

I'm having an absolute fantastic day.

SPEAKER_01

You are. You are.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And we're starting out, so we're gonna have a few people rotate on here, but we got Alan Kavanaugh in the building. Not really in the building, because we're not in a building, but we're outside. We're outside, you know. Yeah. In the nature, in the in the things, in the elements, as they say.

SPEAKER_05

I'm not a fan of the elements.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I'm just glad I brought this fan. That's what I'm that's what I'm glad.

SPEAKER_05

It's not pointed at anybody but you, so.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you should have

Why Community Matters Today

SPEAKER_01

brought your own fan. Well, I'm I know just because I'm the one that thought of it. Don't be mad at me.

SPEAKER_05

Because he's prepared, like a game.

SPEAKER_01

Because I come prepared. Okay? You go into the woods, you become prepared.

SPEAKER_05

When have you ever been in a wood?

SPEAKER_01

I'm just saying, I've heard of it. I've heard about it. So today's episode, we're gonna be talking about coming together, man. Just the support of my grand.

SPEAKER_05

Over you. Over me? What is it? Rah Over you?

SPEAKER_01

Over me? Over us? Yeah. What's the words? Uh just about coming together, man. Coming together as a as a group, as a family, as a community, man. It is awesome seeing the support of just our church family coming together and uh and be out here today, man. It's is so so awesome, yeah. And Alan, I know you you and your wife are, man, y'all were up at the church for a while last night just cooking and getting getting stuff prepared.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, we left about 9 30.

SPEAKER_01

You you left at about 9 30? What time did y'all get there?

SPEAKER_04

Um about 10 till 5.

SPEAKER_01

Oh.

SPEAKER_04

That's like a job. Aren't you retired? Supposed to be.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I work harder now than I did once.

SPEAKER_01

That's exactly right. Yeah, that's usually how that happens. Oh, yeah. Yeah, and it's just, man, it's just awesome to have people like y'all that are willing to do those things, that are willing to set things up and willing to just volunteer your time, even if because she works full time, you know, and and you retire and it's like, man, it's awesome for y'all to to to be spending y'all's time doing those things.

SPEAKER_04

It's great though.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

When is she gonna retire?

SPEAKER_04

She's got like 10 more years. Oh, dang.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

That's gonna be a while. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. You do you ever do early lunch Thursday at her job?

SPEAKER_04

I have taken her to lunch.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

He's not allowed out there.

SPEAKER_01

Just roll roll rolling.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, you get she got mad for uh me going getting her barbecue while ago.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

I don't think that's the true story there, Alan.

SPEAKER_01

I was there for it. Oh uh I remember I remember when you got in trouble. Yeah, I remember when you got in trouble last time, last event, you got in trouble. Yeah. Yep. Yeah, you got in some trouble there. So did you learn your lesson?

SPEAKER_05

No, no,

Late Night Prep And Serving

SPEAKER_05

he did it again today. Right, right.

SPEAKER_01

Like didn't learn your lesson. My goodness gracious.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. And I know, you know, speaking of uh of Zeke, you know, I know he he kind of gets drug into a lot of stuff talking about coming together and being having people come and help set up stuff. So just being a pastor's kid, there's a lot of times where he has to defaultly come and help and come and set up and help tear down and help clean up and help be there to prepare stuff and get stuff together. And I know it frustrates him sometimes. So I'm like, Zeke, come in here and help me. Zeke, come in here and help me. You know, but PK. But what do you yeah, how you feel about that? I know you love to come and help with some stuff.

SPEAKER_02

It's the opposite.

SPEAKER_01

It's the opposite.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, because I'd rather stay home and play 2K. You know what I'm saying? Know what I'm saying? I barely know what he's saying.

SPEAKER_01

Just all the time.

SPEAKER_04

I'm assuming that's some kind of game.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, it is. Yes, it is. Yeah, but and that's what I try to get people to understand is that he's he's spending a lot of time up there helping me with stuff and

Ministry Starts With A Broom

SPEAKER_01

cleaning up other people's messes and doing stuff like that. And it just kind of it kind of comes with the territory, especially when, you know, he's he's talking about he wants to, you know, he wants to go and play basketball for a living, but also, you know, he wants to be a preacher, and it's just prepare you for ministry, you know, ahead of time. That's that's what a lot of it is, is you have to spend hours that nobody sees up there doing stuff.

SPEAKER_05

Start ministry with a broom in your hand.

SPEAKER_01

That's exactly right. Ministry starts with a broom in your hand. Write that down.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, write that down.

SPEAKER_01

And I know it gets frustrating, but also he he also gets a lot of the the benefits of it too, you know, a lot of the cool stuff. He gets to go on, you know, like I'll go preach somewhere, and if I can get him out of school or whatever, then he'll go with me. So he gets to he gets to go on some trips that other people don't get to go on and kind of world traveler. Yeah, he is. He does a great job. Yeah, he's he's pretty he goes to camp on June the 1st. June 1st. Yep. You what? Yeah. You excited? Yeah. Are you nervous or just excited?

SPEAKER_02

I don't know. Oh, I don't know. Okay. Because like I know most of the people there, like Andrew.

SPEAKER_04

I am. There's no current there, are they?

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_05

There is fairly certain we have used all of Zeke's words today. Like he's just he's just out. I guess.

SPEAKER_01

And and it'll be I'm tired until he gets home, and then he's up all night and he's fine.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'm playing 2K when I get it. That's a big part of his life, is 2K.

SPEAKER_01

Man, I'm telling you. Yep. So, Alan, what's it like? I know you've you've done a lot of these events and a lot of these things around here. Have you seen kind of a shift in so many people coming along and wanting to help and wanting to get plugged in?

SPEAKER_04

And well, this is the second year for this to happen. And I wasn't here last year, but from what I've seen today, it looks like we've had a really good crowd. Yeah, we've sold a lot of sweet stuff today. Yeah. If everybody eats everything that they bought, yeah, they're gonna need to go to the doctor.

SPEAKER_01

Right, everybody's gonna be around tonight. They're gonna be back up here tonight, just everybody's running around in circles. Like, what is going on?

SPEAKER_04

But we was blessed to have everybody to bring a lot of sweets and to be sold. Yep. And I think we've done very well. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

That's awesome, man.

SPEAKER_04

That's what's up.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. Well, and it's especially when you know you got people that are good at certain things. So you got people that are good at baking, people that are good at setting up, people that are good at like managing things and and and stuff like that. It's when when everybody has those strengths, you know, it's it's awesome and it comes, it tends to come together, you know. Pretty well.

SPEAKER_05

Come together.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, Lord.

SPEAKER_05

I make John Lennon proud soon.

SPEAKER_01

You make something. I listened to that this morning. Matter of fact, and I was I was listening to the Beatles vinyl this morning. Um, but yeah, you heard that from upstairs. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I was like, I had my headphones on. I was, of course, you know, playing my uh I bet you weren't playing 2K. And I I have my headphones on, and I was like, I hear like I hear some old school music, so I like took up my headphone and heard it. I was like, oh, probably dad.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Wait, whoa, hold up. Wait. Yeah. Why do you say it like that? You said it with a tone. I didn't like that. I didn't like that at all.

SPEAKER_05

Well, you do turn 40 next month. I don't like that either.

SPEAKER_01

Why do you bring that up?

SPEAKER_05

Because it's fun to do so.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my gosh, what the heck, man?

SPEAKER_05

Wait till you turn 56.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

I mean I make that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Hey, I was beginning to wonder myself.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. But we're going to rotate some people on of just some of the people that came to help and came to set up and get things going. And and man, just the blessing that everybody is. And Alan, again, we we just want to thank you and and your wife and what y'all do day in and day out, week in and week out for the church and for the community and and for you know for me and my family, and we just appreciate y'all so much.

SPEAKER_04

Well, we appreciate y'all and we love you, and you do a great job at the church.

SPEAKER_01

Well, thank you so much, man. It's it's just so encouraging to be connected with y'all and we love you so much.

SPEAKER_04

All right. Love you. All right. You okay. You me?

SPEAKER_01

Well, thank you, man. I fly.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I'll try to you what? I fly landed on my elbow that scared the.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, you think it was a bee or something?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I seen a bee earlier and I about took off running.

SPEAKER_02

I went to the bathroom, right? Yeah. Like that, like over there with the door open. It had about three holes in them. Yeah. And then there was like a hole in the corner. And there was a nest in there. I I already know there's gonna be 70 fli like there's gonna be 70 wasps.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, they're coming at you. Ready to fly in.

SPEAKER_05

So you did not pee in one of the holes. Is that what you're saying?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, no, yeah, don't do that. That would be that wouldn't be good.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, don't pee in the holes. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So now we got Mike Trevillion on. What's up, bro?

SPEAKER_00

Glad to be here.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So we're man, we were just talking about just people coming together and and how many hands it takes to just put something like this on, and and and just the turnout that just we've had and the community has had on just people willing to come and help and spend their Saturday out here, you know, being able to serve the community and and have a good time. And and you know, you and Miss Ann are are two of those people that man, we can we know that we can call on you and you're there to help, whether it's at the church or in the community. It is also so how how long have y'all been a part of this community?

SPEAKER_00

Uh I I was born and raised here.

Volunteering Culture And Local Museum

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

About five miles out of town.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And then Anne would come out of the shoe with the pig.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, okay. Uh oh, the rivalry. Oh man.

SPEAKER_00

How'd that work? Yeah. Well, actually, I went to Greenway School, so the rivalry was Greenway the Picket.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah. Man. It's like, you know, you see some like um, like say a parent. I know there's there's like moms in the NBA that she has two kids that are in the NBA and they play on different teams. So they do like the split jersey where it's like half one team and half the other.

SPEAKER_05

Is that like the Anthony's?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so yeah, yeah. So you got people like that, yeah. Uh but yeah, I know y'all are y'all are some people that are plugged into the community, man. You're always doing stuff. You're you're on the board, right? At the at the museum?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, I'm vice chairman of the board at the rector community museum.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, and I know y'all do a lot of stuff up there for the community. Y'all do concerts and all kinds of stuff.

SPEAKER_05

And I was wondering about that this morning. What is that? Is that just a rector museum or is that civil war or what do you what do you got at this?

SPEAKER_00

Any kind in the rector school district. Okay. It has to have something to do with rector school district. Okay. Which is the Greenway area, Boysville area, knob, all the way to the river.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Okay. Cool.

SPEAKER_00

You have to you have to draw a line somewhere because if you don't, you can just get overwhelmed.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you got room for right, yeah. Which I haven't got to go up there yet, you know. Uh that's what we were talking with Joey earlier. I haven't got to go up there yet, but you know, we plan on going up there and checking it out and and and doing a tour and all that. But man, it just takes so many hands to put those things into action. You know, it's it seems like every every person that's ever taken a shower has got a good idea. You know, they say, you know, the best ideas happen in the shower. Um it was a quote, I think it was man, I think it was um Steve Jobs, but I'm not don't don't for sure quote me on that. But the the quote is that everybody has a good idea while in the shower, but it's the ones who get out, dry off, and do something about it that changes the world.

SPEAKER_05

Amen.

SPEAKER_01

You know, so it it's it it just takes people to put it into action. Everybody could throw a good idea out, but if there's not somebody there to put it in action, it's for nothing. It doesn't mean anything. You know, so um you're one of those people that you're in you're in let's let's get it done, guy. Right. You know, what do we need to get it done? And and have you seen a a shift in in just the past couple years of of people willing to step up and willing to step in and volunteer and help?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, this town's always been good about volunteering. Yeah, but yeah, I believe it's getting better, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And other towns will say, I wish we could volunteer like Rick.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I know that's what we were talking about, you know, with the with the uh the picnic. You know, it's all volunteer, like everybody comes out there just to say, Hey, we're gonna put our hands to work. And again, on a Saturday, on a Sunday afternoon, on on these off days, where people are willing to come up and and say, Hey, we're gonna put our hands to work and help, is is awesome to see. It is, you know, and and we talked to Zeke a little bit about how frustrating it can be for him, you know, when he kind of gets made to help, you know, whether we're at the church or whatever, where it's like, hey man, I need some help setting up chairs, I need some help doing this. So he just kind of gets volunteered to do it. You know, so um I know that gets frustrating, and he loves to do that, but it's cool to have people willing to step in and help. And I and we just want to say, like we told Alan and Trish, we just appreciate you and Ann and y'all's willingness to to actually put hands to work.

SPEAKER_00

Well, we thank you.

SPEAKER_01

You know, and and man, it's just amazing.

SPEAKER_00

I enjoy doing it. Yeah, I'm a family history buff anyway, so the museum.

SPEAKER_01

There you go.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I like doing that.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. What is the coolest piece of history y'all have gotten over there?

SPEAKER_00

Oh gosh.

SPEAKER_01

You got anything that kind of sticks out to you? Like, man, that is really neat.

SPEAKER_00

We got a military room.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It's got uh all the costume. We have mannequins in there with costumes or uniforms from uh rector people who we got a couple generals in there, yeah. We've got uh mapping the little country schools, we got all kinds of phones, cameras, uh signage, rector, yeah, school, we have all kinds of school stuff. See, there's like three schools in there's Rector, Blake County Center, which is Rector Greenway.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, okay. Because didn't they because they kind of merged into one, right?

SPEAKER_00

In 84, I believe.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Yeah, that's cool. Yeah, because uh who were man, I was talking to somebody about that where um I I guess they once they merged they had to figure out a name, maybe, or something like that. Uh so that that's cool. I mean, and and I'm I'm the same way, I'm a history buff. I love it, like I took my dad to the to the museum in Bloomfield, Missouri. It's a military museum, and it was just so cool to walk through and and see all that stuff. You know, so it's uh that's all that's all amazing. Again, it took a lot of hands to get that, you know, get that all together.

SPEAKER_00

And yeah, I don't know. Museum, one of the coordinators at the state come in there and hooked me around. He said, Y'all never fill this up.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And when you come back about a year later, he said, I stand corrected. Yeah, right.

SPEAKER_01

How how much of a scare was it when the when the building went up in in flames right there next to y'all?

SPEAKER_00

That was a scary time. Yeah. Yeah, they was calling all the board members and we was calling for help. We thought we were gonna like to carry everything out. Right. But the fire department did a great job. Yeah. But yeah, and they said, Well, so what start to start to carry it out. Where do you start?

SPEAKER_01

Right, yeah. It's like, oh, everything. I don't know, like everything you can. Yeah, oh yeah. Man, they have that I couldn't, man. I could yeah, you can't you get in there and get overwhelmed. All right, where do we start? Right. Yep. Yeah, and it's and it's awesome again. Just watch the turnout and watch the our huge group of people that just come in to help and hang out, and man, it's it's just awesome, it really is. But but man, we love you and we thank you so much.

SPEAKER_00

And what's neat is when somebody comes in there, they look at the signage and stuff, and they'll say, Oh, I went through that store, my grandpa went to that store. Yeah, it brings back memories to it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, oh yeah, absolutely, man. Well, we love you so much. We're gonna rotate. Miss Samantha's gonna be coming in. Appreciate it. Yes, sir, yes, sir. Love ya.

SPEAKER_05

I don't know if we can put the headphones on that big head or not.

SPEAKER_01

Uh oh, oh, that's messed up right there.

SPEAKER_05

It's not gonna fit.

SPEAKER_01

That's messed up right there.

SPEAKER_05

I know, I feel bad about it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I could tell in your voice. You know, it's the voice, it's the it's the tone of I feel so bad. I feel so bad.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, so super bad.

SPEAKER_01

What's up, Samantha? What's up, what's up? What's up? See what she did there? Don't do that. You try to take over. Hold up. Let's calm down. It's bad enough that Zeke does that when they take over. Try to do my what's up. Let's see who can do the best. Okay, out of y'all three, we're gonna start with Richard. Let's see who can do the best. What's up, what's up? And y'all, the listener, be the judge. Here we go.

SPEAKER_05

What's up, what's up, what's up, what's up, everybody.

SPEAKER_01

Well, that was not bad. Okay, okay. I dig it. I dig it. All right. No, it's not. Oh, Samantha next, okay. I gotta go next. Yeah, okay. Yeah, it's a line.

SPEAKER_06

All right. What's up, what's up, what's up, guys? Thank you for listening to the Almost Brothers podcast.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, not bad, not bad. All right, okay. Which Zeke's got a little bit of a like a heads up. He's got a little bit of an extra advantage here

Running Events Without Chaos

SPEAKER_01

with the DNA, you know. The DNA. Yeah, with the Simmons DNA, okay.

SPEAKER_02

What's up, what's up, what's up, what's up, what's up? Welcome to the Almost Brothers podcast. That's pretty good too.

SPEAKER_05

He's got that smooth jazz. I know, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, what are we thinking? Yeah, it's got that. Yeah. Zekster's got it. He's got that uh that uh deep uh Wow. That uh that uh deep that thing that you don't have. That thing that that's messed up, man. Come on. Come on, what are we doing? I come I come here to try to get uplifted, and there you go, just cutting me down.

SPEAKER_05

Tearing a brother down.

SPEAKER_01

So, Sam, I know you so what's your history here in town? You've been here your whole life.

SPEAKER_06

Oh my gosh, yes. Yeah, born and raised here. And I don't know if I want to admit it, but born in California, but pretty much raised here. Okay. Uh out in Boydsville, out in the country. Went to school here, everything. It's just that explains a lot though. I went to school here.

SPEAKER_01

So how much right you've got to do. So how how how much does things like this just really uplift you knowing that people come and and support and put their hands to work and and really want to get out and and and actually make this a success?

SPEAKER_06

Oh, it's amazing. I love like the Labor Day does really big, but when a the smaller events like this does just as big, it's amazing.

SPEAKER_01

Yep.

SPEAKER_05

Uh she's bought 26 pieces of jewelry, so right.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's yeah, that's so true too. Man, yeah, yeah, that's it's like it's like these poor vendors, you get so many people that that want something. It's like, all right, we're shut down for the next two hours, so we got a line over here. It's awesome though, because I know that you know, I know they probably get bummed out if if they come set up and do all that and and nobody comes through, so it's awesome to see, like I said, a success and everybody rolling through and getting stuff. That's like I've seen 15 lemonades, I think, over here from that one lemonade place. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

I got some jerk chicken earlier and it was amazing. Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

You keep rubbing it in.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. Yeah, I am. And you're another one. I mean, you do our our car show, so we'll be doing our second annual car show there at the church, and and you know, s seeing all the hands that it takes to set these things up and get these things going, you know, I know, especially for someone like you that's in charge of that, it you appreciate all the hands that are willing to help get it going. You know, it takes a community to get those things going.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, it I didn't even realize how many people we had in that car show working it until I got to like who did this, who did that. And it was probably twelve to fifteen people that it took to run that one event.

SPEAKER_05

You can't do an event like that without multiple hands.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, it's and even this event, yeah, you know, people set their own stuff up, but you probably had 15 people helping organize and yeah, because you gotta let everybody know where they're going and make sure you get phone calls and make sure you got stuff set up and what time blocks and what you know uh you want to do the announcements of you know, we have this many vendors and all that, and you want to kind of make sure you have a good eclectic group of vendors.

SPEAKER_02

Eclectic. That's right. You're upgrading your vocabulary.

SPEAKER_01

You know what I'm saying? Hey, sometimes my vocabulary can become very spectacular, you know, very auspicious, as some would say.

SPEAKER_02

He's going over the top, man.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, but yeah, it's it's it's awesome, especially when you get here and it's like everything is you know, is going the way it should be, right? You know, and not chaos, you know, because you have some events that end up being awesome, but it starts out as absolute chaos where people are just going crazy, you know.

SPEAKER_05

So uh it is stuff when stuff is mismanaged that happens, you know. You show up to get set up, it's like, um, what do we do? Like, where do we go? Well, I don't know. So-and-so is supposed to be here, and and they're not here, and it's it's a whole thing.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, and just making sure all of it, all of it gets done. Now, I know I know on a different episode I wanted to get your input on this. We talked about how, again, kind of the theme for all this is community and people coming together, but how important is community? Like you're raising a son, you know, a young son. He's what, eleven? Eleven. Eleven. How important is community, teachers and coaches and church family in helping raise your kids, you know, because we you know we've all heard that saying, you know, it takes a village to to raise kids. How important is that in your family and in your life?

SPEAKER_06

Oh, it's very, very, very important with Lane because I don't have that help from family or his family. So it's it takes the teachers building him and his want to do better and helping me guide him into

Raising Kids With A Village

SPEAKER_06

wanting to go to college and wanting to do all that because he doesn't have that male role model that teaches him that side of it. Yeah. And the coaches building his character and his respect blessed. And showing him how to be that team player, that all-around guy, and the church family showing him helping me guide him in that way. Yeah. And it's not, oh well, that's mom. No, that's Mikey's doing it, Richard's doing it, Zeke. Zeke is a good role model for him.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Like it's it takes everybody. Especially when it's just the mom in the situation. So it it's it's amazing.

SPEAKER_01

And you see, just what you talked about earlier is one he he he talked about wanting to be that role model and that kind of big brother to some kids at school. So you see that that not only are the kids seeing it, but the parents are seeing you do that and how important that is. Doesn't that make you feel good?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Zeke is broken, dude. Dude, I swear I would just he's gotta go home.

SPEAKER_01

I want I want to put my knuckles right on his rib cage, is what I want to do. But yeah, it's it's it's awesome to see, even that, to see someone that you raised help lead someone else, you know, because it does. It takes every I had I had big brothers, you know. I had cousins and friends that were older than me that helped me on my journey as well. Some of them for the bad, but you know, they helped me on my journey of just like my cousin Chuck wasn't the greatest influence, but one thing that he did for me was he helped me build confidence. I never felt uncool around him. He always made me feel like a a friend, a buddy, you know. So that was something that was always good, having that older cousin to kind of take you under his wing and and just kind of make you feel cool, even if it was just, you know.

SPEAKER_05

In your own head.

SPEAKER_01

In my own head. Right. Because I could go home and know I'm not, but um, but yeah, it's so it's that that's important. Jamie was talking about that the other day. We were listening to music, and she's like, Oh yeah, I remember that song at the skating ring. I was like, it's crazy how differently you and me had had our lives were very, very different. Absolutely. You know, I remember that too. I remember getting beat up to that song. You remember riding around with your boyfriend to that song. Like we live two different lives. So yeah, but it's cool. And and told Mike and Ann and Alan and Trish all of this, but we just appreciate you putting your hands to work and not just it's easy to have an idea, it's hard to have an idea and put it into actual action, you know. So we appreciate you know how much you do and and and all the the hard work that you do to to get the idea into actually happening. Well, thank you. You know, so I'm I am I'm excited about our our car show. So let our listeners know when is the next car show?

SPEAKER_06

It is November 1st.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_06

It starts at 9 a.m. Judging ends by about 10, 10.30. Depends on how many cars we have and how quickly our judges judge.

SPEAKER_03

SPEAKER_06

SPEAKER_05

That's and that's my thing too. I'm not a car guy at all, but I can appreciate a nice car.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

You know, it I love to look at classic cars, have no idea what makes them tick at all, but they are gorgeous.

SPEAKER_01

SPEAKER_05

I just saw my wife at the shaved ice truck.

SPEAKER_01

Look, it's so funny this whole time. He's like, where is my wife at? She's got my wallet. What is going on? Where is she at? You just randomly hear about her at a booth or see her at a booth.

SPEAKER_05

I gotta get online and cancel my car right quick.

SPEAKER_01

Like, wait a second. Wait one second. That is so funny, man. Who else? Who else do we have lined up to? Is anybody everybody's too scared to go on, man? Everybody, I don't know. I don't want to.

SPEAKER_03

They're so super scared. You ain't lying.

SPEAKER_01

Nothing to it but to do it. Yep. Yep. Well, we sure love you. And y'all got anything, Zeke? Any last thoughts on your mind before we pack up and get out of here for the day?

SPEAKER_02

I'd rather poop in the sink than sink at the poo. Write that down.

SPEAKER_06

Okay.

SPEAKER_05

Can't see me shaking my head, but it's very, very intense. Amen. Yeah. That's your son. I wouldn't tell people, but that's your son.

SPEAKER_01

Is that what you had on your head, Nar? Is that it? That that was your ending?

SPEAKER_05

I I I really do appreciate because we're fixing a move to this community. So it's really good to see this community coming together and really supporting each other. And and and I've bought stuff today that I shouldn't have bought, but I wanted to support everybody coming out. So it was good, man.

SPEAKER_01

It was a good time. It it's awesome, dude. It really is. Really awesome. Awesome to just see people out and about and communicating, talking to each other and being there for each other and supporting each other. It's it's a beautiful thing, man.

SPEAKER_05

It's a beautiful thing.

SPEAKER_01

It's a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful thing. Well, and I, you know, I mess with everybody. Like, oh, what beautiful weather. We couldn't ask for better. And I just, this is depressing to me. I know. Sunny, sunny and 70. Mm-mm.

SPEAKER_02

Man, what if it feels like a little rainy today?

SPEAKER_01

Hey, see? Like a nice that's your sun. A nice 45 degrees, a little rain.

SPEAKER_05

And that's fine if you can stay inside, but for something like that.

SPEAKER_01

No, sitting right here would be fan.

SPEAKER_05

Because it's 100 mile an hour winds that would come with it, and it'd be boring. I didn't say a hundred.

SPEAKER_01

Why are you yelling at me?

SPEAKER_05

Here's your thing. Stupid 40s.

SPEAKER_02

I am not 40 degree weather is like a little going overboard for me. But like um like a high 50s. Yeah. Or like a low sixties.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, okay.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I dig it. Because I don't want too hot, but I want too cold, but I'm more on the cold side.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so you're the you're the uh the middle porridge guy. Yeah. In the in the store.

SPEAKER_02

Pretty much.

SPEAKER_01

This is too hot, this is too cold, this is just right.
