Where’s the healthy line between sharing your work and chasing the spotlight? We dive into the messy middle ground of self-promotion in ministry and music, exploring how to be visible without making yourself the point. Our conversation gets honest about motives, calling, and the practical realities of discoverability—because doors don’t open if no one knows you exist, yet hype alone can corrode the heart.

We unpack the difference between God opening doors and our responsibility to show up: posting worship sets or sermon clips, keeping language centered on service, and building a public record of faithfulness. We talk about denominational names and livestreams as forms of branding, why that isn’t automatically vanity, and how intent shapes impact. We also tackle the frustration of being overlooked while louder voices get booked, and map a path that blends craft, consistency, and humility.

A major theme is platforming others. From “up and comers” speaking slots to inviting musicians and teachers to share the stage, we show how leaders can turn gatekeeping into discipleship. Calling becomes our guardrail—knowing whether you’re built to teach, preach, lead worship, or support—and we celebrate the strength of small churches: intimacy, accountability, and real growth. The takeaway is simple but demanding: be faithful where you are, share your work without centering yourself, and trust that the right doors will open in the right time.

If this resonates, follow the show, share this episode with a friend who’s wrestling with visibility, and leave a quick review to help more people find these conversations.

Warm-Up Banter And Time-Clock Jokes

unknown

What do you mean?

SPEAKER_01

We're here. We're on the clock now.

SPEAKER_00

On the clock. We're punched in. People think we have an actual time clock on the punched in. That's weird.

SPEAKER_02

Is that what it sounds like? You ever had a job? Yeah, where with the oldest.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_01

My first job at um restaurant. I'm not gonna drop names. Yeah. You know what I'm talking about. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

We had a punch in. Yeah. Cool. We I started with that and then it went to the fingerprint.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So I've had that.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I actually punched in when you had to punch in, like you stuck an actual time card in and it goggon. Yeah, that's what I did.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yep. Richard started his first job. They etched his time on stone.

SPEAKER_01

You ever seen uh reaching price for me?

SPEAKER_02

You ever seen you the Flintstone movie? You've seen the Flintstone movie? The live action one? Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Long time ago.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, everything is in stone. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

That's a really dumb movie. It really is.

SPEAKER_02

It's so good though, man. It's yeah, it's it's a sequel to it, believe it or not. They did. Yep, they did. What's up, what's up, what's up, what's up, what's up, what's up, what's up, what's up, everybody. Welcome back to a brand new coming at you live episode of it's not live either. Like what? Uh welcome back to the podcast.

SPEAKER_01

Currently live at the Almost Brothers, not by the brother.

SPEAKER_02

We're recording it live, but I guess that goes without saying.

SPEAKER_00

If you recorded it at all, you're live. Right. Right.

SPEAKER_02

So uh as always.

SPEAKER_01

My brain hurts.

SPEAKER_02

As always. Richie Rich.

SPEAKER_00

What's up, man?

SPEAKER_02

Ty Ty.

SPEAKER_01

It was Rock Vegas, right? Wasn't that the like the sequel thing?

SPEAKER_00

You broke the Tyler. He's completely and totally done.

Setting The Topic: Self-Promotion

SPEAKER_02

Oh man. On today's episode, we're going to talk about where is the line that we should draw on self-promotion.

SPEAKER_00

That's good.

Heart Posture And Motives In Ministry

SPEAKER_02

I can't remember who it was. We had a conversation about this. Like, because everything that we do is kind of self-promotion. You know, you want, you want to do a good job, you want to, you want to have success, you want to be given opportunities. So you have to put yourself out there at least a little bit on some, like, hey, I could do that. Hey, I'd be good at that. Hey, I could. But where's the line drama? Because it seems like in some circles it's a free-for-all. And then in some, it's no self-promotion whatsoever. You can't do that. That's vain and that's conceit, and that's all these different things. It's like, well, in order to be successful, you have to kind of put yourself out there. Right. You know, in order to get opportunity, you have to put yourself out there. And that that goes with anything. If you're a plumber, you have to put your business out there, you know. You have to plumb. You have to. That's a fact.

SPEAKER_01

I well um I would say it it depends on what it is. Yeah. If we're if we're coming about it in the uh sense of uh in in the world of church and all that, it I'd say the line is heart posture. Yeah. Because one thing I wrestled with with the whole music thing was I felt like all I was trying to do was figure out how to market my name, how to make people know who I am, and uh internally I had a problem with that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Because I don't I don't like being the center of attention, I don't like being like in the spotlight, which seems kind of backwards. Counterproductive. That's that's uh and anyway. Um yeah, that's that was something that I wrestled with and um you know there's certain things you you can do, um, certain things you obviously shouldn't do. Um But I think I think a lot of it comes down to uh your heart posture behind what it is you're trying to do.

Denominations, Branding, And Visibility

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Um and that's where that's where the conversation started, I think. I can't remember who it was with, but it was that exactly. It was in in like a church circle, if you're like a a worship leader trying to get your name out there, or uh even a pastor that that like try like an evangelist, you have to put yourself out there at least a little bit, and and the person that I was talking to, they were like, I again I remember the conversation, but I don't remember who it was with exactly. But they were they were saying, well, they believe in like no any of that, kind of putting yourself out there. And I'm like, but wait a minute. You you go to a church that belongs to a a denomination, so the very name on your church building that you're a part of is that somebody came up with that name and put and put it on there as literally promote, like you're promoting your church with that name. So it's like that in itself is going, hey, this is our building for for our belief, for our thing. And it I don't see anything wrong with that. And there has to be a level of that, otherwise, you're never gonna succeed in whatever it is you're you're striving to do.

SPEAKER_00

Well, and I I consider I consider you, Mike, to be one of the best preachers I've ever heard. And I can be easy now.

SPEAKER_01

Man, about to stretch his hat out. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Can I finish? No. Oh, sorry. Go ahead. Thank you. And I consider you, Tyler, to be you and Liv to be some of the best musicians I've ever heard. Y'all both gotten opportunities, but not through self-promotion. Right. If the promotion, if the if the opportunities are going to be there, God'll open those doors. Right. You don't necessarily have to self-promote. Now that being said, there's nothing wrong, like Tyler and Liv, they have a Facebook page. It's specifically to put praise out. It's not, hey, look at us, look at us. It's hey, look at God. And that's the that's what you were talking about about you know, the how the heart sees it or how God sees your heart. Yeah. Because if you do it for the right reasons, God'll open those doors.

SPEAKER_01

And that's what I was gonna uh say too. It's you know, say you're you know, promoting or you know, say you're evangelist, you're a music, whatever it is, what are you known for?

SPEAKER_00

Eating buffets.

SPEAKER_01

Food pastor. If if Michael is known for let's just I don't know, let's say Michael's just known for being a good speaker, you know, and he's wild and outrageous and I don't know, tall. I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

Is this going somewhere?

SPEAKER_01

Yes, eventually. If if he's not known as a preacher that speaks the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, and is on fire for God, he's not doing it for right reasons. Yeah. If me and Liv are doing the music thing uh for any other purpose other than to make our praise public, right? I think we're doing it for the wrong reasons.

SPEAKER_00

Right, right, you're right.

God-Opened Doors Versus Self-Marketing

SPEAKER_02

And man, it it and it gets frustrating when you do have that right heart, but you do want those opportunities just to just a door to open. Like that's all you ask for, and you see others that that do the promoting that are putting themselves out there, and they're getting all the door because they're seen. Nobody knows that you you can eat that you even want to do it or that you can do it. So it gets frustrating. It's like, man, I would love to be able to bless people and to to be out and and you you want to do it not because you're good at it, you want to do it because you're doing it for the Lord. So you have the right heart, but but those things don't open up because you people just don't don't know, you know? Uh because even God's gonna open the doors, but if there's if you you if there's no door to open, right, you know, if nobody knows they're not gonna just randomly come across you if you're not putting it out there. Like if if we weren't going live, nobody would see that outside of the people that are in the room. You know, so there has to be a level of that.

SPEAKER_00

Right. There's that's kind of how you got D now down there, was they saw you on Instagram. Right. There's nothing wrong with that, right? Not a single thing wrong with with just putting your stuff out there. And if if those opportunities come, then they come.

SPEAKER_01

But yeah, well, it's it's it's I would say it's almost no different than you preaching just any regular Sunday and someone telling someone else about you, and then someone reaching out to you saying, Hey, we heard this about you. We want you to come preach at this thing first. Or same thing with I mean, uh uh I got uh what's he the camp director or whatever he's called for Camp Allen reached out to me yesterday because he wants me to come lead worship for Camp Allen this summer. Don't know him, um, never met him, but reached out to me through other people, said hey, heard this about you, like this about you, want you to come do this for us.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's awesome.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and I and I that's one thing where I'm I'm really big on giving people a platform to do that. You know, I like having people. That's why I bug y'all so much on, hey, can you come and do this? Hey, can you come, would you come and do this service? Will you come and do this thing, this event, whatever? Because I like to use the platform that God has blessed me with to try and bless others and give them a spotlight so that, you know, I felt hopefully that us kind of pouring into you over the years at Remnant has given you an opportunity for that to happen, for people to go, oh, I've heard about this guy, I've seen them play here or here, or you know, whatever. And it's like, because that I we get to celebrate that, like we're a part of that. So like anything that happens with Tyler and Liv, like, oh man, they get to go and do this. Like, sweet, that's awesome. We feel like we win too because we're connected to you, and it's like, man, this is awesome, you know. So it feels good to see the people that you platform get to get things going in their life, especially when it's somebody that does have a pure heart. It's it's good to be a part of.

SPEAKER_01

And that's it's it's no different than when I started when I took over part-time uh the worship team at Liberty Hill and started working there full-time. You know, that wouldn't have happened if we hadn't came to Remnant.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_01

I I really don't I don't think it would have.

Frustration With Being Unseen

SPEAKER_02

And man, it's it's just awesome to see, you know, and and it's and especially in in preaching circles, and I could be wrong, but I feel like musicians, the, the, the pla especially around here, like the sky's a limit for y'all. It really, really is. And it's harder, it's harder for certain areas to get that opportunity because there's just not as many of them. You know, there's just not as many opportunities. So it's awesome to get those opportunities. That's why I like I'll have uh uh Andrew come down and preach like for something because it's it's hard to find that for someone that's you know that's speaking. Not a lot of churches open up their platform for that, you know. So uh I oh I seen one church, they're doing like I think they call it like up and comers. So they do like four weeks at their church where they let young guest speakers come in and speak to just give them an opportunity to grow and to and to try to to kind of get the ball rolling and people get some eyes on them so that they can, you know, get those opportunities. So it's pretty cool to watch people platform other people and say, man, we want to give you an opportunity for this. That's why I love I love watching podcasts where like podcast hosts go on each other's podcasts, you know. So that's pretty cool.

SPEAKER_00

My my mom asks me all the time why I'm not a lead pastor somewhere. Yeah, that's not my calling. Yeah, you know, I I firmly believe that if you step outside of what God has called you to do, that it will not be blessed. Yeah, it won't be it won't be successful because it's not what God wants you to be doing. You'll end up like Saul.

SPEAKER_01

That's right. Torture spirit. That's exactly right.

SPEAKER_00

But you know, I'm a I'm a teaching pastor, not a preaching pastor. Everybody that's seen me preach knows that I do not belong in a pulpit. It's not my thing. I can do it. It's it's just not, it's it's underwhelming.

SPEAKER_02

Well, and vice versa, everybody that's sat in you teaching see that this is good. This is where he belongs. So the same adverse effect to that is when you are doing what you're called to do.

SPEAKER_00

It's like, yeah, this is yeah, this is and and you feel more comfortable in in that in that calling if you're doing what you're supposed to be doing.

Referrals, Platforms, And Lifting Others

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and I also also think a lot of people put too much pressure on the the big opportunities. Um you know, that um you know some pastors or some worship leaders who are maybe I well I'm not in a big church, so I'm not really doing it. Yeah. There's there's pros and cons to you know, big churches and small churches, and I think it's now more than ever, there's there's something there's something different about small churches that I don't know. I've it's like it's I I can't really I don't know if I can put to words. It's like that's kind of it. It's a small church. There's something different about small churches, something you know, I I think I was talking to you the other day about it. There's something there's no something more personal, personable in your office, yeah. Yeah. Um not knocking big churches, you know, you can have that at some level, but there's there is just something personably different about a smaller church. And you know, I was uh thinking about, you know, kind of where we're at in our you know season of life, and you know, I I took I took on this job full time and then you know we end up got getting pregnant, had kids, and for a while I was thinking, okay, like what's what's the next move? What's the next step from here? Yeah. And really just kind of dwell on that for for a minute and just really felt God's speaking to me, take care of what I've given you. Yeah.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

If you're faithful in the small, he will give you money. Yeah. And we we can miss out on that because that's good. Yeah, we had a whole conversation of like the the pros and cons with each, you know, and it's like you you want to be effective at where God has got you at. And and we all we all want bigger, better, more, we all want to do greater things. Absolutely. If you're anybody with a pulse that is wanting to see things go forward, you're always looking for, but you can miss out on what God is doing now because you're looking at something forward, like, oh, I can't wait till this happens, or we get to here, or we do this, and you miss out on those moments and you can't get them back.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, well, and essentially you won't get those opportunities, those doors won't open because you're not being faithful with what God's uh entrusted you with. Right. Essentially, you're missing out on your current opportunity as well as your future opportunity.

SPEAKER_02

That's good.

SPEAKER_01

That's good right there.

SPEAKER_00

Write that down.

SPEAKER_01

Write that down, save that on your memory card.

SPEAKER_00

Chisel it on my stone.

SPEAKER_02

Y'all remember back when you had to have memory cards for video games?

SPEAKER_01

Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my gosh. Like you had to leave it on all like for like 17 days while you were trying to beat one game. Like, nobody turn it off. Let us say still.

SPEAKER_01

I'd get I'd get so mad because we we wouldn't like label the memory cards. It was really just me and my brother. We wouldn't really label them and be like, oh, and they'd all mostly look the same. Oh, this one's it. You know, in there crap, turn it off. Yeah, take it out, put the new one.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, no, squirm my tongue. It's always the last one you pick, no matter what.

SPEAKER_01

Like, or or you're just like, Where?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, where is it?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, you know, when you don't have that problem, then you play with a stick and a rock.

SPEAKER_02

That's right. That's right, Ridgie Rich. Go play with sticks. Nobody plays with sticks. It's 2027.

SPEAKER_00

Me and the boys, you want to go play some stickball? I don't know what that means. I never played stickball in my life. It's like baseball.

SPEAKER_01

I was saying it's just baseball with like a thin stick, and I don't know what they use for a rock. Just a rock.

SPEAKER_02

We've used a rock before.

SPEAKER_00

Sounds really dangerous.

SPEAKER_02

You know, wasn't not dangerous. Yeah. Well, what up, man? What y'all got going on in your life? What's what that's what's up?

SPEAKER_01

What's in stickball dodgeball?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. You can dodge a rock. You can probably dodge a ball. That's true.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. That's what's up. Uh yeah, what y'all got going on?

SPEAKER_02

Cool, cool, cool.

SPEAKER_00

Good talk. I was waiting for wrench, man.

SPEAKER_01

He looked like he was about to go, so I was waiting my turn.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I was trying to think if I actually had anything going on right now. Um been watching a lot of Inkmaster. Yeah, you said that, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Did you start from the beginning?

Calling, Fit, And Staying In Lane

SPEAKER_00

I did, yeah, which was really crazy, you know, because they they talk about stuff from back it's like 17 seasons. Yeah. Yeah. It doesn't seem like it's been on that long. But, you know, they're like talking about monster headphones and you know, stuff that just ain't a thing anymore. Right. But yeah, I've been watching that because why not? Um I've listened to a couple of good books lately. Audible get you. They get you.

SPEAKER_02

Uh-oh, great. Oh man.

SPEAKER_00

The first book of a series is free. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

The rest of them are credits. It's like Netflix. This show is on there. First and fourth seasons on there. That's right. None of the other ones.

SPEAKER_01

It's so dumb. Impractical jokers on Hulu. There's I think there's 12 seasons of Impractic Jokers now, and they only have eight on Hulu.

SPEAKER_00

I was watching Inkmaster on Netflix, and one season was missing episode five. Yeah. That's so weird. I've had that. Randomly missed an episode.

SPEAKER_02

I had that happen with, I can't remember what it was, but we we bought a show on like on Prime. Like bought it. Not rented it, bought the show, and they skipped like five episodes in the season.

SPEAKER_00

Right. It's like, I but I bought the whole, I bought the show. Somebody's getting a strongly weird email.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I'll tell you what, Mr. Prime. We're about to have a look at it. Send a letter to all the actors.

SPEAKER_01

You are not getting your royalties from me. Dear Optimus.

SPEAKER_02

I want my three episodes.

SPEAKER_00

I think it's a different prime.

SPEAKER_01

I don't I don't know if y'all are on a first name basis yet.

SPEAKER_02

Dear Mr. Prime. Oh so mad. That sounds upset. So mad.

SPEAKER_00

Tyler, you got anything?

SPEAKER_01

Um me and Liv, we're we're working on music. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

My kids have been searching for the blessing. Is it not on Spotify anymore?

SPEAKER_01

No, never was on Spotify. Just on YouTube. We just made that up.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, cool.

SPEAKER_01

No. I'll have to tell them that because they've been looking for it and I've I've I'm I'm uh I'm working I'm going I'm gonna do that eventually. Put it on Spotify. Yeah, Spotify, Apple, whatever. I'll tell them to find it on YouTube. Yeah, it's just on YouTube just for now. Um 'cause I've been talking with a couple like producers I can just send our tracks to and have them mix it because I I don't really know anything about mi I can I can about mixing. Yeah. I I mean I can I can get it to sound how how the video sounded, which I think sounded decent enough.

SPEAKER_02

But good stuff, man. I don't know the it was such a good song. It's such a good song. I am currently in a in a show depression.

SPEAKER_01

Uh uh.

SPEAKER_00

Because Stranger Things Ended.

SPEAKER_02

Stranger Things Ended. Did you finish One Tree Hill? No, no. Uh Man, he's he's we're we're about midway through season three with Jay, so he's about to hit uh a certain stuff. Yep, yep, and it's gonna be good, man. It's gonna be good.

SPEAKER_00

It takes forever to get through. Yeah, it really does. He's so mad that he doesn't get to watch it without you. It's like I know, dude. I get it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so we try to do once a week, but uh uh Sissy has has gotten into Harry Potter, so we started that. She likes it a lot.

SPEAKER_00

She's a potter head.

Small Churches, Faithfulness, And Growth

SPEAKER_02

Yep. So we started it. Um basketball season's back in full full swing, so I really don't have a lot a lot of time to do that, but I have been playing my switch, you know, pretty well, just trying to shut my mind off. So I've been playing that a little bit. Yep, got a new case for it to make it more comfortable. So it's been good, man. Been good.

SPEAKER_00

We both had a date night this weekend.

SPEAKER_02

Had a date night this weekend, right? Yeah, we went to a vinyl store, got to go through through that. That was fun. Yeah, and just spend some time. Oh, I was telling her as we were leaving, it it's awesome to to still enjoy each other's company. Yeah, you know, I'm like because there are some couples that like literally stay together for the kids' sake, and they really don't like being around each other very much. And I'm like, this reminds me of just how much I love you and love being around you and want to spend time with you outside of the kids. Right. You know, so it was a good time, man.

SPEAKER_00

You know how you you know how they say it's the thought that counts.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I saw a Bruce Springsteen album, Springsteen album, and I thought about buying it, but it was$25, so you're welcome.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Be glad you didn't buy it because I cannot stand Bruce Springsteen. Really? The boss? Cannot stand them. Wow. Cannot stand them at all. I'm glad that's it. That's all I'd say. So it was a good thing. Yeah, the vinyl.

SPEAKER_01

The vinyl, born in the USA, made in China. Yeah, no. I got I I don't know if this counts, but I got to ride home with Liv, just the two of us, from the hospital when she got discharged.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know if that counts. It's a little date night, you know? That's a little date time.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Take what you can do. That's right. Man, we went to so far. That's really the only alone time we've gotten was when Liz's been in the hospital. That's why she goes to the hospital. Just like need some alone time.

SPEAKER_02

Need some alone time.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we went to uh Jonesboro yesterday and hung out. And we had we had a good time. Just just hung out.

SPEAKER_02

Have you ever ate a culverts? Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Culver's no.

SPEAKER_02

I took Jamie there. It was the first time she'd been there. Yeah. With the culverts to eat. Yeah, it's really good. Yeah. Their fries are good. They got crinkled fries, they're really good.

SPEAKER_01

It's kind of like an not upscale, but like a little better Long John Silvers, I think. Kind of they don't do I don't know. I mean they probably fish, but uh I don't know about like the like the like the you know the fish. I know they do like a fish sandwich.

SPEAKER_02

Because does Long John do they do burgers?

SPEAKER_00

They do if they have an A and W in the same.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Okay. I haven't been to Long John's in forever. Yeah. But covers is good, man. It is good. I don't know. My mom, we she goes by there all the time.

SPEAKER_01

We went there um sometime uh earlier uh last year when we had Inman with us. We went there just for the three of us is like$52. Where's that? Long John Silvers. It was like$52 just for the three of us. I just don't like it at all.

SPEAKER_00

I like Captain D's better than Long John Silvers. I don't think I've tried that. It's good. They got one in Cape.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. No, I don't think I've I don't think so.

SPEAKER_02

Yep. So it was good, man. And we talked we got to sit and talk about uh like our 2026 wish list and talked about that for a little bit on things we want to do for the year. We talked about resolutions last time, right?

Be Faithful Now Or Miss Later

SPEAKER_01

Yep, gotcha. Do you have a new one? Yeah, I don't think we talked about this one. So me and Liv uh are not doing fast food. Oh for the whole year or like the like well, I mean just as little as you as a as a general lifestyle thing. But yes, only if like we don't have like if it's like late, we haven't eaten dinner, and you don't have to do it. We're not gonna cook, right? Nothing's open for us to go get, and we're not going grocery shopping. So just cutting it down. Yeah. So far, we have not eaten any so far.

SPEAKER_02

I like it. That's a good one.

SPEAKER_01

And I and I made sure we didn't tonight, and I brought us food.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Jamie started the year with the 21-day fast of um caffeine. Yeah. Nice. Kind of a reset for there's no way. She's doing good, man. She's she's fighting the good fight. Yeah. We went to the coffee shop Saturday and she had to look at the non-coffee menu. What's on that thing? Yeah, I'm like, give me an extra shot. I'll take her caffeine that she's not taking. Add it to mine.
