Almost Brothers Podcast
Not Everyone's Battle Is Visible
Everyone's fighting a battle you know nothing about. When someone disappoints you, declines an invitation, or seems distracted, there's often an untold story behind their actions. The Almost Brothers dive deep into why giving grace matters and how it transforms our relationships.
Tyler opens by sharing a personal revelation about judging worship team members who couldn't serve regularly. What seemed like disinterest was actually an indication of deeper struggles happening behind the scenes. This vulnerability sparks a rich conversation about our tendency to evaluate others through our limited perspective instead of recognizing their unique circumstances.
The guys explore how daily interactions—from restaurant servers having a rough day to church members quietly struggling—present opportunities to extend understanding rather than judgment. They challenge listeners to take five seconds to offer encouragement that might completely change someone's experience.
But grace isn't just about what we give others. The conversation shifts to the importance of asking for help when we're struggling, especially for men conditioned to "suck it up." By communicating our challenges, we allow others to understand our perspective and potentially offer the support we need.
Woven throughout are personal stories, practical wisdom for navigating relationships, and even a special preview of Tyler's new original song based on the biblical story of the woman with the issue of bleeding. The episode closes with exciting updates about the podcast's expansion into video and newly available merchandise.
How might your relationships transform if you approached each person with the understanding that there's always more to their story than what you can see? Listen now to gain perspective that could change how you view every interaction.

Speaker 2:I don't want to talk about it. I did get. I wanted to start. I got an encouraging word about 20 minutes ago. Good, joe, so it's one of our. One of our board members here runs RIT. Speaker 3:Do not look for that, because it's not there.
Speaker 2:It does not exist.
Speaker 3:It does Well, it doesn't. I don't use it.
Speaker 2:Okay, there you go. It's still there, so friend them on your Xbox.
Speaker 1:Also.
Speaker 2:Tata no gamer tag.
Speaker 1:I haven't had besides our Switch. I haven't had my own gaming console since I was like 12.
Speaker 2:So last year and we just again. So thankfully you joined us today. Today we're going to be talking about giving others grace. You never know what they've got going on.
Speaker 3:Man.
Speaker 2:Preach. So, ty, you want to share your story. You kind of sparked this out, this conversation. Yeah, I don't know what that was before I do.
Speaker 1:Do I need to call nine?
Speaker 2:I know right now or later somebody call nine one one okay go ahead with your, with your, your story that led to this, because it really is a good conversation yeah, uh.
Speaker 1:Well, as I was saying earlier, so I'm a worship leader at my church, I am my leader I am a worship leader at my church and I do uh all the scheduling and planning for that stuff, so I schedule people uh for wednesdays and sundays. Um, and it's one person that I was getting frustrated because every time I sent them uh a request for you know, a sunday for several weeks in a row, denied, denied, nine, nine, nine, like okay I mean you're on the team.
Speaker 1:You probably need to be on the right team to be on the team. You probably need to be on team, to be on the team and I've been, I've been bad family in the past about uh, just not not seeing things from a different perspective and kind of jumping to oh, I guess they just don't want to be on the team or whatever, not knowing that they've got something going on and being on the stage is not the best place for them right now. Yeah.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and, and we actually just talked about this and didn't even know it. You know, and it's awesome how you know things come together, uh, or, or we talk about.
Speaker 2:we talk about like people understanding that the other person may have things going on that you don't right you know, like, like with time, like sometimes people will think you just have all the time in the world to do this or do that, but it's like, well, I've got kids with this going on, or we got ball games, so we got this. So, understanding that that other person and that's good that you caught this in yourself you know to where it's like, oh wait, they probably have something going on outside of what I can see.
Speaker 2:You know, because we do. We think, oh well, they've got the same things I've got to deal with and it doesn't. You know, it's like some people have stuff going on.
Speaker 3:Well, and it's exactly what you said when we started this giving people grace. And really, you know, it's that old saying you don't know what people are going through until you walk a mile in their shoes. It's very, very true. You just never know what somebody is going through, because you know in church circles you're taught pray through it, smile and act like everything's fine, regardless of how you're feeling. You know, put it just, just give it to God and not have to worry about it anymore. Yeah Well, that's not always that easy.
Speaker 2:Right.
Speaker 3:So really paying attention to what other people are dealing with is so important.
Speaker 2:And I think that's the power of connection. So you do understand, you know these people that you're really, you know where your lives intertwine, right, really knowing them. So you understand. Oh, they've got, like the Randalls, 12 kids going on so they don't have the time that we have Us three. You've got a lot of kids. I've got three kids. Y'all are about to have two kids. We're all from very different and understanding each of our, our lives is very, very different outside of just the podcast and we, and we get that a lot.
Speaker 3:You know, just like somebody invites us out to dinner, okay, that's times eight. You know you go to mcdonald's, you're dropping a hundred dollars, right, so it's a. It's something that people just don't think about yeah when they invite us, places it's, it's. It's not that easy just to go yeah, so why aren't you going? Well, but because yeah, and it's embarrassing to be like well, we just don't have the money to do it which, yeah, that's, that's a lot, it's a lot, yeah and yeah, and just getting connected with that person.
Speaker 2:so you realize, oh, they probably have something going on and also that helps them communicate that to you, you know.
Speaker 1:so if you are going through something like let me know that you know, and I think that also allows you to be the person that God might've called you to be for that person. Yeah, you know you're in that person's life for a reason. Utilize that.
Speaker 3:Yeah, if I mean mean, if you can. Yeah, that's. That's so funny that that's literally what you preached on today yeah, come on is staying within you know, staying within your calling and yep, because you'll miss out on those people that yeah you know, cross your path yeah, oh, people think callings is such a I don't know such a majestic kind of oh, I'm called to do this.
Speaker 1:How about just called to be a good friend to?
Speaker 2:someone Right Be an encouragement. You know, just coming in and saying, hey, man, you know what you did last week, just really encourage, Like that lifts somebody's spirit, you know, and that's a gift, it really is. There's certain people that just had these gifts of just giving a hug at the right moment, a smile, you know I mean that's another misunderstanding in church circles is when you hear calling, you think pastor.
Speaker 1:Right yeah.
Speaker 3:The only callings that churches have talked about, but there's, there are so many things that people in the church are called to do.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and it's not just pastoring and there's, you can minister outside of church absolutely yeah, like it's not it.
Speaker 2:You don't have to be confined in a church building to uh, walk in your calling yeah, you ever like, went, like, went to a restaurant and the waitress is just not doing really good. And you, you ever like, take a moment and just be like man. You never know what they're going through. Yeah, they could have just lost their mom today and just had to come into work and they're just going through it, you know, and you don't, especially in our society now. You don't think about the other person. It's very self-indulgent self. You know what I got going on. I need, I need, I need, and we don't think about that other person. It's like man. They could really be going through it today.
Speaker 3:Well, something I'm always very aware of is new people.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 3:Cause you can tell when somebody is training and they're they're already nervous and mess up, and then it just gets worse. So, you know I'm always very observant about that sort of thing, to make sure that you know I give them a little encouragement hey, it's going to get better, you know you're fine. And just giving those words of encouragement. I mean, just take five seconds and be the light in somebody's life, it's not hard, yeah.
Speaker 1:We had a meeting before service starts and the pastor's wife Shoop. Because he said you know someone knew shoot because he said you know someone knew she was talking about. She has a um, a friend, a friend of hers, her, her husband and kids go to another church. But she was saying, uh, they were talking about how, uh, her friend was like they don't you know, they don't feel like the church that they're at now is.
Speaker 1:They've been gone for a while but they feel like they're, you know, need don't feel like the church that they're at now is they've been gone for a while but they feel like they're, you know, need to find someone new, uh, but the kids, or one of the kids, really loves that church and, uh, they're, they're, they're walking a like a on a balance of they really want to try this new church but they, you know, be excited for it, but they also want to be, um, mindful of their kid that really likes their old church and kind of wondering why are we not there and all that. And she and kind of, she kind of just went on like you know they're new and they're not necessarily looking for you know someone I don't know a church, all excited, but just somewhere safe to, to, to feel welcome yeah.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and what happened a couple weeks ago were exactly what you said, where the waitress that came to our table was brand new and they were, you know. The lady even said hey, she's new, she'll be taking your order, blah, blah. And when she got and she was, she was fumbling around it was like, oh my gosh, it was.
Speaker 2:It was like it got to the point where we're all kind of giggling, like even heard like she was kind of good because it just kept. She's like, wait, do we have that to drink? And then come back and we're like, okay, yeah, they do have that and we'd ask for something. And she's like wait, I don't let me go ask. And they're like, right, and then afterwards, on the way out you know she was talking to the lady that was training her I'm like, hey, she did a really good job. Good, I'll just keep going, you know, and it and it does, it gets. It gets exhausting and scary and your anxiety is going up and you don't realize what you could be to somebody, just looking at their side, not worrying about yourself, just looking at what you know, what they need or what they're going through, or you know the struggles that they may be in at that moment well, it's, it's.
Speaker 3:It's exactly what you said. We're self-centered, yeah, I mean we are such selfish people as a whole by nature. You know what can somebody do for us in any given situation? And we've got to. We have to actively try and fight against that in our nature to really view people beyond what they can do for us.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah for sure, beyond what they can do for us. Yeah, yeah for sure. And and you never know who you can touch in doing that, you know it's, it's a beautiful thing when you could touch somebody's life and they see, you see that kind of spark, spark in them, just like well thank you, it's like kind of a breath of oh okay, cool, you know.
Speaker 2:So it's cool to see that when you see that other person's side and and it could be every day I mean the walmart cashier probably going through something. If they're in a bad mood, they're probably going through it. You know, there's something, something may be going on.
Speaker 1:So yeah, uh, yeah I mean think about, like um, the uh, the story in the bible, the, the paralytic man at the pool yeah jesus healed, like the people around there.
Speaker 2:No one really saw them, but jesus did yeah yeah, yeah, just been there and been there and been there and just going through a day and day out, day and day out, and it's like nobody cares, nobody sees me. It's like, whatever you know, you kind of give up and and when that one person does see you and and you know they, they meet you where you're at, it's just like, it's just so eye-opening, it's like, finally somebody kind of sees me and it kind of pulls you out of that and it's, it's.
Speaker 3:It's such a horrible feeling to feel unseen, unwanted, unloved. It's, it's, it's.
Speaker 2:It's just terrible to be in that situation to where you, you feel like less than yeah so just just a little bit of encouragement goes a long way yeah, and also be be okay with sharing when you're going through something right ask for help absolutely you know.
Speaker 2:That's a big thing too, is is, if you're going through it, tell somebody you're going through it, you know, let them know. You know, because that's what I would say to the the whoever you're dealing with is she's probably going through something or he, I don't know, I can't remember if he said it was a he or she, but probably going through something. But let let the people they are connected to you let them know that like say, hey, I'm just kind of going through it right now, so that that's also can be our responsibility. If you are going through something that people know, like, hey, I'm just kind of going through it right now, so that also can be our responsibility. If you are going through something, let people know like, hey, I'm just kind of going through it right now. Please just bear with me.
Speaker 3:It's that easy and that's another side of it too is getting mad at people for not knowing when you didn't tell them Like I can't believe they treated me like that when I'm going through all this, yeah when you ask them hey, what's going on?
Speaker 2:You haven't been here, you need to be here. Well, you just don't understand. Yeah, I don't.
Speaker 3:I didn't know that.
Speaker 2:Sorry, that's your responsibility also to let me know. I know it's a daunting thing and you may have been hurt by people. When you open up, but open up to people, especially if you trust them, open up to them and let them know. Hey, you don't even have to let them know what it is, just hey, I'm going through it right now. You know I'm struggling a little bit, struggle, struggle, struggle, just a little bit. You know, and then then you can get that understanding that you're looking for right and it is difficult.
Speaker 3:It is. It is hard to, especially for guys yeah not not saying that women don't struggle or anything like that. I'm just saying that men in particular have a hard time asking for help.
Speaker 2:Yeah it's, it's just really difficult to do yeah, yeah, we come from that, suck it up suck it up, suck it up and deal with it. Oh, okay, that's been trying, but all right, I'm just, you know, I'm here, don't worry about me, guys yeah, we're trying, we're trying to to teach our foster child, that be asked for that too that too.
Speaker 1:Bring that up. No, to ask for help because there's, like you know, he's having trouble with another boy at school and and punch him in the face and oh, no, not good advice.
Speaker 3:no, no, my bad.
Speaker 1:It got to the point.
Speaker 2:My bad, don't do that, Kids don't do that, Gosh.
Speaker 1:We're about to get banned on.
Speaker 2:TikTok or something.
Speaker 1:But he's been having trouble with another kid at school and it's escalating and we're not finding out until weeks later. We could have had this dealt with Right. And it's escalating and we're not finding out till weeks later and like we could have had this dealt with like and you know, give them a hard time about you know I don't know why you're waiting this long and then also explain like we're here to help.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Well, you're not going to get in trouble for telling us that this is going on. You might get in trouble.
Speaker 3:If you started it right, well you will get in trouble if you started it, but we're here.
Speaker 2:We're here to to do what we can to help you. Yeah, kind of your job. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, so it's like let us know open up. Let us know you're going through it. Okay, cool. How can we help? And do not choose violence and don't don't is what I meant to say. That's that I heard that don't, don't I was really silent don't do that much, even the face.
Speaker 3:I heard, I heard the first part too, yeah yeah.
Speaker 2:So I want to move into the segment of that's what's up. So, because I'm really excited, will you hand me that? Give me that cord right there. Yeah, yeah, man, yeah, dog. So so this is a segment where we talk about something that we're listening to, watching a new tv show, movie, something we're excited about, and I've got a new band that I have just started listening to and I am absolutely smitten that's a terrible word for that.
Speaker 3:Darn, yeah, darn diddy, darn darn is it cool in the gang absolutely not cool in the gang.
Speaker 2:Absolutely Not cool in the gang Is it Sammy Dolls.
Speaker 3:That's random.
Speaker 2:So I'll go around and then I'll go last. It's not Marky Mark, it's not Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. So, rick, what do you got going on? That's what's up. Don't do that.
Speaker 3:We talked a couple weeks ago About that show, about the cleaning lady that become a detective. Yeah, so it's called highly, but high potential yeah, high potential dude, that show is really good. It's, it's, but do you?
Speaker 1:understand my it's, it's terrible lazy writing and it's if you're looking for deep yeah, no, no, it's very much at the surface, but do you get my frustration with the detective dude?
Speaker 3:Well, the overall. Like you know, this lady's a genius or whatever, but it makes the cops look so stupid. That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 1:Like the one detective.
Speaker 2:That's what I was thinking when y'all were talking about it.
Speaker 1:The detective. Sorry, I'm so baffled I couldn't get out Like looking into a murder or something. I think it was the husband, prime suspect in all these murder cases. If it's a wife, it's always the husband. Oh, I was out of town. Oh, that checks out.
Speaker 2:That's it. Guess we gotta move on.
Speaker 1:Definitely wasn't him, he was out of town.
Speaker 3:He said it. But overall it's a good show and the finale of American Idol is tonight. Oh snap Tonight he will be on there.
Speaker 1:He will he is on there.
Speaker 3:yeah, so we will find out who of the top three is the winner. Do I do that? Never mind, I do.
Speaker 2:You do.
Speaker 1:The winner of American Idol you reap what you sow, yeah it may be a two night event, I don't know probably cause I drag it out and drag it out.
Speaker 3:Oh well, everyone's gotta sing yeah, yeah, well, and they've got special guests. Like all, the judges will sing and CC Winans will be there, and Brandon Lake and yeah, lots of people, lots of folks, salt-n-pepa is gonna be on the finale.
Speaker 1:Oh my gosh.
Speaker 3:Yeah, and Papa's here but that's all I got. Tyler Carrie Underwood will sing darn right, she will.
Speaker 1:We started we. What did we finish? We finished the this new season of the Rookie. Is it over? We started we, uh. What did we finish we? We finished, uh, the this new season of the rookie.
Speaker 3:Is it over? The season's over? Yeah, okay, now I can watch it.
Speaker 1:Um started watching Richard. Oh yesterday or two days ago, um brand likes got a new song out, and it is Yep. For those who aren't can't watch, uh I was banging my head check the check the Brandon Lake box. We got got it covered yep get my check in the mail. Um been recording more writing more.
Speaker 2:Yeah, you sent us a few yeah.
Speaker 3:I didn't get to listen to the second one you sent.
Speaker 1:I think that's my favorite because that's because I catch myself wanting to listen to that and I don't know, I feel weird about wanting to listen to my own music, but that one I'm like, shouldn't that be?
Speaker 3:what you I know, but it's like I don't know that's like I don't know obviously you don't know.
Speaker 1:That's like, that's like looking at yourself in the mirror and be like I just want to stare at myself in the mirror Because I look so good.
Speaker 3:That's my life. Let me look at this, do the dance. Why would you want to go to Milani? You can see this Crap, we're live Got it. Oh man, that's funny.
Speaker 1:Kevin James baby oh man, that's funny. Kevin, james, baby, yep, um, I think that's all I've got, I think forgot to tell you something else about american idol.
Speaker 3:No, I'm kidding, I don't even have a thing.
Speaker 2:I could play this through I didn't hear the chord. No, you're good, you're good, you're. I'm just playing over the man it is. I don't know where I came across. They're called the Citizens. Oh, you played me, yeah, so good man, and I hope this doesn't get copyrighted. This is from the Citizens, okay.
Speaker 3:Without further ado, it is so good.
Speaker 2:That's twice we've used that.
Speaker 1:It's so good. Lo and behold, we do not own the rights to this music.
Speaker 2:It is so, so good, so I don't know how much I could play, but if you are out there, I mean, check this band out. They are very, very good. They're called the citizens and I have just been listening to them non-stop the past week. That's cool, it is really really good. It's like indie, it's like indie rock, christian music. It's so good, man that's awesome yeah, I went back and downloaded a couple of their albums and, and it's really good.
Speaker 3:So they're not super new, I mean, if they're just you discovered them.
Speaker 2:No, yeah, they're new to me, so I sent a message to them and I'm waiting to hear back. I'd like to put their song as like our intro something like that, but man, it's so good so I've been listening to them they are they are amazing I remember one of their songs.
Speaker 3:I can't remember um what is it the can't help falling in love? No, what's no, that's elvis yeah, no, I almost got a couple.
Speaker 2:Can't fight this feeling, yeah, right, yeah yeah, I can't remember which one it was. It was a concert, it it was a live album. I got a few of those, not really watching anything new. Oh, we did Watch Tree Hill, gotta say that too. We all have our thing. American Idol Running like on Tree Hill. We watched a new movie. It wasn't good, it wasn't good, it wasn't good, it wasn't, it wasn't good, it wasn't um anyone but you. Yeah, it's like a comedy rom-com.
Speaker 2:It wasn't very good, the guy off of twisters yeah, uh colin howell yeah yeah yeah, it wasn't like when him, who is it him? And um, is it sydney sweeney?
Speaker 1:I don't know, they're like the main. Oh yeah, yeah, I've seen. I remember seeing that on facebook, yeah they're like the main characters.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's like when them two are on, it's good, and then anytime there's a scene with anybody else in the movie, it's it goes to terrible, so it just it wasn't very good and supporting cast yeah, it wasn't very good at all, I was like no, I don't watch the.
Speaker 1:We watched mufasa a couple weeks ago the live.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah, the new one. Yeah, do you like it? It was pretty good.
Speaker 1:I I enjoyed it more than the. The new live lion king. Yeah well, I I love that. It just it goes back and tells the story of no something we don't know. All right, it's, it's kind of original original.
Speaker 2:It's something original kind of yeah, I don't know, yeah, uh, so we watch that. That's about it.
Speaker 1:Nothing, nothing else really new all right yeah play uh to the new band and play. Play the song I sent y'all. That's what I was about to say. Okay, okay, well, you were talking about it. And I'm like I don't know if he wants about to say okay, okay, well, you were talking about it, I'm like I don't know if he wants us to play any on here, absolutely we have permission for this one. Yeah right, we've got this whole one right here that's what I'm talking about, so y'all get to.
Speaker 2:If you listen to this episode, you are going to be the first to hear this so I wrote this outside of what outside of us and live maybe I posted a snipp, a snippet on TikTok, but I haven't put out anything.
Speaker 1:I wrote this on the story.
Speaker 2:Which one the Touched by his robe?
Speaker 1:Yes, I wrote this on the story of the woman with the issue of bleeding All right. I read through all the books that's mentioned in it's only, I see, in Matthew it's only five verses long. In Mark, no, matthew's two verses long, two verses long. Mark is five verses long and Luke is nine verses long, I think. So it's not very long, but I feel like it deserved a song.
Speaker 2:So here it is. You'll be able to get this eventually, eventually. He's working on it, she tried it all, but still she bled.
Speaker 1:A dozen years of praise and dread.
Speaker 2:The crowd was thick, her heart brand thin, but something holy led her in. Thank you. She reached free alone, With just a touch of being made. Well, she reached and at his feet she fell. She touched his robe. His power flowed. His daughter with no name, she's not living in her veins.
Speaker 1:You playing the whole? Thing? No, no.
Speaker 2:No, because they've got to get it. That's only, you get a little taste. That's good. You know it's like at Costco, where they've got to get it. You get a little taste you know, it's like at Costco, where they've got the little.
Speaker 3:Come and get you some cheese here. I don't know you just Compared his music to cheese.
